everyone should learn C and Assembly. Do you agree? Full interview is here https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_L3gNaAVjQ4

@nixCraft
lex and his weird guests have such specific subjects to be odd about.

We tried forcing folks to learn C and ASM. I had a blog where I showed folks how to make a bootloader and operate VESA modes in the early 00's

nobody cares, because it's not terribly useful

hstone32,

@nixCraft yes, I would say so. I TA for a class that teaches C and ASM. When students learn these things, they evolve from being users, to being creators.

@nixCraft Can't write the program that the user explains in natural language with Assembly?😉

@nixCraft The correct answer is Yes.

@nixCraft Programming in assembly is a different mental model than programming in a high level language. I don't think is necessary to know how to code in assembly in order to code in C or Python. That said, I think it's useful to know at least how to read assembly because you may need to read a dump or a stacktrace while debugging

@nixCraft no, I don't agree. I did some assembly on the Apple ][ and a little C after Pascal and I don't think my students (architects, designers, artists) should go through it. Who is "everyone" for him? Software engineers? There are probably more than 4x nonprofessional programmers out there than professional software developers (see my pinned Scaffidi quote https://ciberlandia.pt/@villares/109885982178235703 )

@nixCraft

I haven't learned C or C++. I did spend some time learning Java in it's infancy. I'm retired now (a career in Perl, PHP, HTML, and JavaScript), but now concentrating on learning Python and Rust. Should I go back and learn C/C++?

@chessert @nixCraft i wouldn't think so.
