hey electronics heads. anyone got any tiny little project recs that use bga components? seems like a good soldering skill to pick up, but i've no head what to put together to learn!

it's sounding like "teeny tiny microcontroller dev board" might be the way to go. i wonder how hard it is to make a disguised mitm cable as a hobbyist these days.

ErinRose,
@ErinRose@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline a mitm printer (b) cable would be fun and maybe easier, haven’t seen one of those before

jacqueline,
@jacqueline@chaos.social avatar

@ErinRose that’s easy you just pretend to be one of those fucking huge ferrites

ErinRose,
@ErinRose@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline hmm yes, a pine marten

@jacqueline MITM gameport/joystick cable that flips an axis’ polarity at random intervals

@jacqueline evil grin Twinkie, of the Chromebook fame

jacqueline,
@jacqueline@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark i am reading about it, and it's incredible the degree to which google engineers will fuck up "download and build firmware" at every opportunity

like what in the hell https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-library/guides/hardware-schematics/twinkie/#building-firmware

buzzyrobin,
@buzzyrobin@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline @whitequark how you write software when you’ve been living in da Internal Proprietary Corp Tools zone for too long

jacqueline,
@jacqueline@chaos.social avatar

@buzzyrobin @whitequark why do they want you to install git-gui

jacqueline,
@jacqueline@chaos.social avatar

@buzzyrobin @whitequark wait gitk is also a git ui. why do these instructions ask you to to install two separate but unused git uis

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@jacqueline their USB CDC ACM implementation is so broken that the browser frontend always pegs a core

so if you power the laptop through this thing it offsets your result cause the CPU draws like twenty extra watts

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@jacqueline also the web frontend parses the human readable debug console output (where some commands just print binary blobs), ignoring any errors that do often arise, using regexps

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark @jacqueline Oh god, I remember looking at that thing and being like "wat" when I saw the sheer density of that PCB.

23n27,
@23n27@dgc.social avatar

@jaseg @whitequark @jacqueline I mean why wouldn't you use a 12 layer HDI (or whatever, I don't recall the details) board for something like this, right?

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@23n27 @whitequark @jacqueline gotta have a controlled-impedance board for signal integrity at the 300 kBd baud rates of those CC lines /s

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@23n27 @jaseg @jacqueline who doesnt already have a contract with a board house for making chromebooks, right

jaseg,
@jaseg@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline How about a breakout board for this little chip, could be useful if one ever needs just a bunch of voltages for biasing stuff:
