One puzzling trait of Macron is that he sounds progressive on the foreign stage, and indeed might be one of the best leaders on the side of democracies these days; but he is almost universally hated at home, and often sounds like a frigging Pétain nostalgic.

Well...
On the one hand, the Brexiters' Little England is vastly more xenophobic than what even Le Pen dares to speak.
On the other, it's all well and good, but if Macron really believes in what he says, his policies would be different, rather than some half-baked version of the projects of the far-Right.
