@nyrath
I remember that! Per Hiero Desteen, the intrepid yet helpful explorer!

Note: Stirling E. Lanier's novel “Hiero’s Journey” is now available in eBook format. This is of interest to any player who needs more material to expand their campaign.

Fighting mutants and evil telepaths in post-apocalyptic Earth, oh yes!

@nyrath
memories of playing Gamma World

the early 1980s were a deeply weird time, huh?

nyrath,
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@tkinias

Indeed it was. Though it was a toss-up which was more weird: Gamma World or Metamorphosis Alpha

@nyrath
I never played Metamorphosis Alpha – I was young enough that it seems to have been gone and largely forgotten by the time I was gaming in the early ’80s.

@tkinias

Which is pretty much what happened.
I got to play it because I am old as dirt.

Another weird one was Starfaring. I almost got the chance to illustrate that, but they wisely decided to use Ernest Hogan

@nyrath Andre Norton's "Star Man's Son" is more great inspiration for this genre, and there are several monsters included in Mutant Crawl Classics that are direct homages to the creatures in the story

@breadwizard

Agreed.

But get a load of this!

Left: 1954 cover art for Daybreak—2250 A.D. (aka Star Man's Son)
Right: 1985 cover art for Hiero's Journey

@nyrath There's a third book?!?!?!?

nyrath,

@Raz

Apparently. To be released later this year.

Understand it is ghost written by Sterling's god-daughter using Sterling's notes. He was in a car accident that left him mentally disabled, so he could not write the 3rd novel.
