Font Awesome raised $721,620 to build an open source library of web components. Their goal was $30,000.
I need to collect my thoughts and put it in a blog post but I'm curious what the community's thoughts are on this because that is not a trivial amount of money.
As a web platform PM working in open source and trying to find ways to get funding for projects...was this good marketing? Is it selling a different solution to what's already out there?
@seaotta By supporting the kickstarter, business and hobbyists alike were able to lock in a drastically reduced price on the annual subscriptions of the Pro products, as well as a lifetime license.
@seaotta This isn't even the first time they did this either! They raised $1,076,960 for FA5 a few years ago.
I think the first time was marketing, now they have a following - so it may just be "Font Awesome did a thing" and people flocked to it.
There is excitement for Web Components in the community, especially here on Mastodon - is that part of it? I don't know, lots component libraries out there.
It's neat to see alternative monetization solutions for open source, in my opinion anyway.
If I were to put money on it, it would likely involve more folks who don’t do design work and want a turnkey answer for something they might not be “good” at. The same way that Canva is a popular product, or no-code solutions like AirTable or Notion are as well.
