Wow! Kubuntu 24.04 is looking really good! Oh, and, why isn't Kubuntu on Mastodon? 😀

@cmccullough nice.
@AKernelPanic - do you know who in the community would run a Kubuntu account? 😀

@krisfreedain @cmccullough that's a great question for @RickTimmis

What's the story with *buntu going snaps-only in the GUI? Have they move all .deb packages to be snaps as well?

cmccullough,
@cmccullough@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane I think they have and I'm not a fan. I have no issues with Snaps but to remove the ability to install .deb packages is just ridiculous. This is why I've been a Debian guy for so long.

@cmccullough

Agreed. I was skeptical of the decision to include non-free drivers by default, but it made Debian 12 really awesome to use. I've got it on all my x86-based machines except for one box. :)

@RL_Dane Nice! I used to run OpenBSD and really enjoyed it. It's been many years, though. I even ran netBSD on some hardware. 😀

@cmccullough

10 recently came out, which garnered some excitement.

still seems like the best choice to throw on random bits of hardware, at least from my extremely limited experience (but also others' advice)

I like because it's pretty close to the functionality-level of Linux, but, you know, SANE. ;)

Linux be like: OVER-COMPLICATE ALL THE THINGS!!!!!!!

@RL_Dane LOL!!!!! Yep!

@RL_Dane @cmccullough yes OpenBSD has best source code quality, but it is limited by filesystem features, or conteinerisation, also virtualisation, but i also like it best of BSD .

check OmniOS it is really features rich unix based on illumos

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@kodonaut @cmccullough

Yes, especially since they gave up on softdep.
I understand the desire for code clarity, but vanilla ffs is really a relic.

Any advantages for OmniOS over freebsd or openbsd for a desktop user?

kodonaut,
@kodonaut@mastodon.social avatar

@RL_Dane @cmccullough i would recommend it only as server:) i can imagine illumos based server for small to mid sized companies, thanks to support of almost all opensource virtualisation technologies, imagine it is unix with KVM bhyve conteinerization and it has many other security features

i use NixOS on my desktop.

there is also NixBSD in early stage

@kodonaut @cmccullough

That's wild! Have you seen ChimeraOS? It's the linux Kernel with the FreeBSD userspace. Looks interesting.

kodonaut,
@kodonaut@mastodon.social avatar

@RL_Dane @cmccullough no i dont know :) i know only kFreeBSD it is oposit :)

i see just this?

Ah, a name collision. How linux ;)

I was talking about this, sorry if I got the name slightly wrong: https://chimera-linux.org/
