🔥 Drop Google Chrome and try out Vivaldi for a week, I dare you.

@webology I have been using Firefox since forever, but then I saw this in your post that makes me think about my choice: "I also don’t trust their parent company because of where their money comes [...]". Any pointers to learn more on this?

@demstavrou Fwiw, this isn't meant to be an anti-Firefox piece. It's an anti-Google Chrome piece. Now that we have that out of the ways, most of their money comes from Google.

We are going on over a decade of this being the case.

Also, here is one of their recent mishaps that felt too big to mess up this badly. https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/22/24109116/mozilla-ends-onerep-data-removal-partnership

@webology Trying it. I like it, but I get intermittent freezes. Kill Vivaldi and restart helps. Also, lots of tabs in Vivaldi - other apps start having issues getting a http connection. Close Vivaldi, and those apps start working again. Annoying. Pixel 7 Pro, fully updated.

@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@LarsFosdal I have only installed the mobile app, but I haven't really dove in yet. I'll give that a try this week though. Thanks for the mention and I hope it's a serviceable issue.

@webology I would try it but it looks like 1Password support is .. not really there. Which is a complete and total nonstarter for me.

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@offby1 Works for me via the Chrome Store or I would not use it either.

offby1,
@offby1@wandering.shop avatar

@webology Yeah, I just tried that -- it worked, but searching for “1password in vivaldi” (which I tried originally) dumped me in some very sketchy wikis

shrug

Guess I'll give it a shot. So far, I'm more frustrated by the broken bits :D

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@offby1 Boo. Thats what I get for diving straight in.

@offby1@wandering.shop avatar

@webology So far, the Chrome extension worked; I just didn't realize I could grab those freely.

Now to figure out if my massive set of profiles that I use Chrome for -- one per Google domain I have an account with -- is going to fit into this world.

(My use of profiles is why I cannot make the jump to Firefox; their UX for those is untenable on macOS, and nobody seems to get it)

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@offby1 I haven't fully landed there for profiles. I still go back to Chrome for three or four profiles (work, non-profit 1, non-profit 2, whatever other profile I am forgetting)

I'd love to know how that goes.

I'm also going to try to move some mailing list organs off of Google Groups, which seem to serve no one outside of people who really just want email forwarded to their main accounts.

@webology such a good browser for work.
Built in mail client and calendar. Different workspaces so you can keep tabs/windows organised between jobs/functions.

@webology I’ve been testing it out but haven’t made the switch 100% yet

@webology Good choice. Vivaldi sparks joy and doesn't track you everywhere. I switched to Firefox to get rid of all the Google annoyances.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@oliverandrich @webology I didn't want to use Google Chrome and now I have... Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera, and (since a few minutes) Vivaldi.

Though I only use Edge for accessibility testing and thought I'd removed Brave.

Edit: I somehow forgot about Safari, but can live with that.

@oliverandrich @webology Browser Overflow 😅

oliverandrich,
@oliverandrich@fosstodon.org avatar

@mahryekuh @webology Oh yes, I am always juggling with Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox for testing our web apps. For my personal browsing I switch between Safari, Firefox, Vivaldi. Depends on which one is the least annoying at a given time. :) Brave is on my black list.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@oliverandrich @webology Deleting Brave as we speak

oliverandrich,
@oliverandrich@fosstodon.org avatar

@mahryekuh @webology Good move. 👏 I have too many LGBTQIA+ friends and coworkers to stand Brendan Eich.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@webology You just motivated me to try it. There are so many Chromium-clones out there, one could get lost.

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@mahryekuh Let me know what you think.

@treyhunner just went dove in, and we spent ~5 minutes on Thursday comparing config options.

treyhunner,
@treyhunner@mastodon.social avatar

@mahryekuh

The biggest upsides so far:

  1. All the options
  2. The unconventional but nice defaults for many of the options

The biggest downsides:

  1. All the options
  2. The unconventional and weird defaults for many of the options

I've spent so much time configuring it over the last week. 😬 Enjoying it so far though.

@webology, I'd love to see a write-up on the options you've tweaked from the defaults. I'd share something similar, but I haven't figured out how to determine what I changed.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@treyhunner @webology As someone who predicted downside #1 after reading upside #1, please do publish all your favorite settings!

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@mahryekuh @treyhunner The options are a lot, but I mostly installed an extension or two and then looked for and updated annoyances over time.

Updating the theme was my highest priority: https://draculatheme.com/vivaldi

Updating search options and later turning on sync was good quality-of-life updates.

I'll think about how to write something. I'm afraid to revert any defaults.
