PyGrunn, the Python and Friends conference is back tomorrow! After forgetting to RFP last year, I am happy to be back on the stage tomorrow.

The title of my talk is: "My path to becoming a Django contributor" (also suited for those who do not use Django).

Fun fact: I will be presenting at 10:15 in Camera 1, the same time and place as two years ago.

Who will I see there?

As promised by last Tuesday (woops), here is my latest article:

"What people wish they knew before becoming involved in OSS"

https://marijkeluttekes.dev/blog/articles/2024/05/16/what-people-wish-they-knew-before-becoming-involved-in-oss/

Inspired by research for my presentation for tomorrow.

Edit: I removed the follow-up source toots because they mucked up the timeline, and they're also boosted or linked in the article.

We don't say "congratulations" when someone becomes an open source maintainer.

Instead we say, "Congratulations, thank you, and sorry"

@mariatta

Me, seeing this while writing an article about what people wish they knew before becoming involved in OSS : 👀

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@mariatta I'm due to give a presentation tomorrow about my journey to becoming a Django contributor.

Would you be OK with me using this toot (with or without your name, whatever you prefer) if I can fit it into a slide?

Edit: Or maybe use it in the article instead. I'll have to see where it fits best.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@mariatta That can be arranged! Maybe not the link from a slide specifically, but a mention of your handle for sure (and there will be a link in a blog post).

Today’s post for : Why we need listlogs in order to make a happy web

Contains nods to recent posts from @bjhess, @amerpie, and @cory

@bendaubney @bjhess @amerpie @cory As someone unfamiliar with the term, what is a listlog?

It's notable that almost every other Django book out there doesn't touch deployment at all. Makes me wonder if I should stop trying to cover it and just move it to a more advanced thing that is separate. Especially now that there isn't a great free option, it's a non-starter for many people apparently based on feedback I've gotten.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@wsvincent Tagging @keeshink because he will give a presentation on testing Django applications on Friday, and he might have an opinion about this. (The presentation will be at PyGrunn conference, and eventually be published)

Can't believe they spent a gigawatt training GPT3 and the fucker isn't even trying to overthrow humanity.

Look, where I come from, if you burn a gigawatt of energy to make an AI, it had better damn well go skynet on you.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@foone I am unsure if you are excited for the AI apocalypse or you just like to taunt our future overlords.

When you had an intense week where everything happened at the same time and then you realize you’re giving a conference presentation on Friday. 👀

Also, it’s Monday today.

I mean, it’s going to be good and I am excited for the conference, but I am definitely trying to not do anything silly next weekend.

Did I mention it’s Monday today?

@simeon Cool! I don't think we actually met before IRL? I am pretty recognizable in the crowd, so feel free to say hi! (I'm also going to be a speaker again 🙌🏻)

mahryekuh,

@simeon Oh, fun! Not strange [that you’re going] considering you work with the organizers. 🚀

MS Docs: Using the Setup Assistant with modern authentication is considered modern authentication.

If using Setup Assistant with modern authentication wouldn't be considered modern authentication would it still be called Setup Assistant with modern authentication?

Following my question about language differences, someone sent me this perfect book advice:

"The Culture Map; Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business" by Erin Meyer.

The link below has a descriptive summary.

Hat/tip to @nessita for recommending this book, and @CodenameTim for alerting me to it.

I saw the fuss about the “Don’t link to our website” people yesterday, and didn’t comment much until this morning, because I hadn’t realized just how crap-laden their page was (my ad-blocker did its job). My initial reaction was that they kept talking about “the mastodon devs should fix this” but isn’t part of the deal with open source (which mastodon is, right?) that if you see a problem, you can go fix it yourself which they didn’t seem to have any interest in. Open source much, guys?

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@davepolaschek That is a great advice! It appeals also to the community aspect of OSS, where everyone has different opinions. I hope to fit this quote into my presentation because it’s good.

PS. I have no clue what the “don’t link to our website” thing is about, but I hope they figured it out.

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaoming @davepolaschek If it’s about link preview generation, I absolutely still need to fix my blog to showcase smaller image. Right now it just show my name and takes up a big part of the screen. Then again, I’ve been meaning to fix that for too long 🥲

@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

Open source contributors, what did you wish you knew when you started contributing? Or is there something that kept you from contributing for too long?

I am asking for a presentation, which I will give in two weeks.

@kellogh That’s a good one! Nice reminder for https://www.volunteeramnestyday.net/

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@anderseknert Thank you! I definitely did that with Django. Unfortunately the other staple in my toolset has a maintainer who likes to chase people off, but you can’t win them all 😁

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@CodenameTim This is great! I wonder if there are people who only want to do big changes will be highlighted in release notes 🤔

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@CodenameTim Someone once said that if you don't believe a small change makes a big impact, just remove a (semi)colon from your code. 😅

mahryekuh,
@mahryekuh@fosstodon.org avatar

@Di4na Django’s Selenium tests would sometimes just nope out too, though I’m pretty sure Sarah fixed it (though graciously allowed me to take the credit) 😂
