i'm not vegan but i am becoming more curious about vegan foods / restaurants, and honestly the woo woo factor is very high. either it's run by a cult or it's run by a person into this stuff. very often!
@bnys i've seen the actual damage that she does to people in east and southeast asia so i find it extremely difficult to support them. it would be like going to eat at a restaurant run by scientologists, knowingly
@skinnylatte one's mileage may vary, however! the (sadly now-closed) excellent vegan place i used to frequent, here...it's possible? that the owner was into that stuff? but the actual staff, including executive chef, bar manager, etc, were absolutely not into it.
@cour13r5 most people working at places are probably not but in the case of loving hut style restaurants, spending a single dollar at their restaurants feels to me like propping up scientology. i don't care how good the food is, i just can't do it. having seen the damage they've done in asia.
I've been buying a variety of fresh mushrooms at the local farmers market, very good assortment and quality. A couple of weeks ago, the seller was busy explaining the tinctures they started offering, and making claims for their health benefits.
@skinnylatte It's amazing how good vegetables, spice and nuts etc can taste when the recipe is right. We had a vegetarian restaurant near the office and they did a delicious "nut roast".
We've come a long way, because the early days featured horrible, cardboard tasting, or tasteless "vegeburgers" and such.
@randulo applying careful selection of produce and mindful techniques and thinking about cooking can produce great outcomes with any type of dietary preference. we just haven't had a lot of those in this part of the world until very recently, outside of 'ethnic' restaurants. glad that's changing.
the vegan clone of mcdonalds (mr charlies) tastes to me better than actual american mcdonalds.
