I've spent four months looking at AI spam on Facebook. I've messaged hundreds of people commenting on the bizarre images trying to determine if they are real, and to understand what's happening.
Facebook isn't the "Dead Internet." It's something worse:
@jasonkoebler thanks for doing this mind numbing research & telling the story! one thing i haven't seen analyzed is the use of fake or AI accts for political campaigning on FB, which I observed in alaska elections as early as 2018, when an Exxon-etc funded astroturf campaign had dozens of fake but real-looking "Alaskans" commenting on its posts. we reported them and FB did nothing, i also tried to get alaska reporters attention on them, but also no dice. seems bad
