Why not just buy a Smart TV but setup a Pi-hole or some firewall that blocks all nasty traffic?
Less fiddling for your parents and a nice project for you 😉
ETA: but I work mainly for the devil in Azure, so what do I know about that...
@derthomas Pi-Hole was my initial idea, too, however that would presumably prevent app update, which will eventually end up in a broken service.
I was thinking about an airgapped TV HDMI-connected to a streaming box that does not phone home apart from updating the apps/OS and can be controlled via a simple remote.
@derthomas Sure you can, however that window would allow the TV to download an enshittified new FW and probably to send all the gathered telemetrics back to CCP/Evilcorp, too.
I've seen three year old once flagship 8K TVs to be measurably slower compared to their out of the box experience, just because a bloated FW has been applied. Some may reason that TVs should be replaced every five years, but that is not an avenue I want to pursue for financial and ecological reasons.
Am I too paranoid? 😁
