Frustrated with DuckDuckGo. I need solid news searches.

When I read about something newsworthy, I like to read several articles on it. i.e. Saudi Arabia is arresting people for anti-Israel social media posts.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=saudi+arabia+crackdown+anti-israeli

Plenty of articles, except every single one of them when read references a Bloomberg report. But that report isn't in the search results, and of the derivative articles I've read, none of them link back to the source.

ai6yr,

@exador23 Yeah, I just came to the same conclusion, the redirection to scraped MSN versions of articles makes Duckduckgo useless in news.

@ai6yr fwiw, you get far fewer of those with a regular search instead of the 'news' tab. And for the most part, if you're searching a current event, most of the results are indeed news orgs.

@ai6yr @exador23 Recently finally switched to Duck for Safari search on phone, but I keep going to google.com for many searches. :(

I did finally find it by adding "bloomberg" to the search terms. But jeeze. shouldn't have to do that. The organization that gets the scoop should be the first search result.

A good search engine would easily know that "bloomberg" was a related keyword because it appears in the first paragraph of every article whose results were prioritized over bloomberg's

@exador23 1) the Bloomberg article requires a subscription 2) it’s not really true - you can find Saudis including figures like Turki al-Faisal all over social media & other media loudly criticizing Israel

@exador23 written by Sam Dagher an Assadist. Defies reason when you say well-researched and accept this as fact. He has no access to prison data. The social media file has been moved into new hands from the creep who organized Khashoggi’s assassination but maybe the new guy wanted to float this news (in English) since the King is incapacitated.

@Sherifazuhur

  1. I provided a non-paywall version of the article.

  2. It is a well-reported story. The veracity is sound with a multitude of sources including:

"...a significant increase in prisoners at the maximum-security facility over the past six months. This was corroborated by several diplomats in the Saudi capital and human-rights organizations, who said they have been tracking a spike in social media-related arrests since Oct. 7."

Seeing people posting negative things, and Saudis stepping up arrests of people saying negative things are not mutually exclusive truths.

@exador23 I’m sorry, but as someone who lived and worked in KSA and writes on it, it is more of the nonsensical Biden admin spin which pretends that normalization is nigh. And I don’t know if you read Arabic & can therefore check Saudi social media, but it is either untrue, or there will be 1000s and 1000s of arrests. And there are not.

@Sherifazuhur again, those are not mutually exclusive truths.

Disputing that is like saying it's impossible that US universities are cracking down on pro-Palestine student protests, because there are 100s of such protests happening right now.
The continued prevalence of protests does not mean that the crackdowns aren't real.

I hear and believe your lived experience.

I also believe the "Riyadh-based diplomats and human rights groups" who have seen a "recent spate of arrests" and that those arrests are "motivated by security concerns specifically linked to the deadly Oct. 7 invasion of Israel by Hamas and its aftermath."

@exador23 Why aren’t the sources named? Why does the article state the author cannot verify the # of arrests for this supposed offense since 10/7. Did he not ask the Ministry? That’s Journalism 101 - prove the lede (that arrests actually increased) Bloomberg & NYT have every so often come out with untrustworthy pieces on KSA, sometimes bringing in a non-Gulf expert (& feeding him/her a story through plants, fixers, other journos)
