@joesteel would something like https://maestral.app/ provide a reasonable solution to continuing to use Dropbox, but with a simpler client for macOS/Linux?
@iamwcr No, it’s not a real problem. Just inspired by Dan’s problem (which is with the client). I was curious what services are even out there to compete with Dropbox at both the client and service level.
@joesteel fails on self-hosting but Synology Drive is aces and you can stuff your Dropbox inside of it. Which leaves you with a functional Dropbox but no client apps on any of your computers.
@joesteel Right, I'm saying, you can go all-in on Synology Drive, but to ease away from Dropbox, you could choose to sync with it and stuff that within your Drive. So you have the best of both worlds.
@caseyliss Yeah they have a personal plan (which I had to use for something once) but they cap their personal plan storage at 100 GB, and then you have to get a business plan which starts at $45/mo ($15/mo * 3 user minimum). They ceded the power user (digital hoarder) market to Dropbox.
I have a feeling that I’m not going to like the replies to this one, but after Dan’s bizarre Dropbox experience I realized that no matter how bad Dropbox is there isn’t really an easy replacement (No, iCloud Drive absolutely does not count.)
@joesteel You're not wrong. Yeah, it can be a pain, but then occasionally we'd get a client that insisted on using Google Drive, and it was like COME BACK DB, ALL IS FORGIVEN
@jsnell Yeah, I’m not making any plans to move anything. Dan’s problems just made me realize that I couldn’t even think of a viable alternative. Like if Dropbox went under, or something else, there aren’t a lot of drop (heh) in replacements
@joesteel I know you have other historical reasons for asking, but I’m pretty sure Dan’s problems aren’t specific to Dropbox per se, but due to his Dropbox client finally needing to use Apple’s horrendously bad File Provider APIs for cloud/sync services vs. their own sync system. (Little solace if Dropbox and everything else on iOS and macOS now have to use it though.)
So you’d also want to narrow your search to options that somehow weren’t forced into using half-baked File Provider. Sigh.
