@jsnell I can’t get it out of my head, that once I heard you mention on a podcast that you’d never seen all of Deep Space Nine. Am I crazy (meaning that you never actually said that), or is my memory right?

In light of this season of Discovery, if you haven’t finished DS9, it might be a good time to do so!

(I’m also predicting Disco making a visit to the Wormhole/Celestial Temple soon…)

@dkelkhoff I literally stopped watching DS9 after "Past Tense" and so I've seen very little of seasons 4-7. I did start watching them again a few years ago but never got through it. It's true! I did watch the finale and know the general sketch.

I also never finished Voyager, and missed large chunks of Enterprise.

Why would Apple's brand be at risk? Their products are manufactured in China, chips designed in Israel. They keep breaking laws and bullying their partners, tell us that developers leech off their success. They monopolize the market, nanny their users. They kicked the leading game engine developer off their platforms over a dispute over an (illegal) clause in their contracts. Their prices keep going up in a cost of living crisis. And they tell us it's for our own good.

I see no problems here? 😜

@stroughtonsmith Actually makes me think that if Apple takes its (usual) approach and incorporates AI into specific features that are very targeted, rather than just slathering LMMs everywhere, that it might escape the worst of the backlash.

Then again, perhaps Apple is simply not able to escape backlash at this point.

The problem with the iPad as as many have pointed out is that the software hampers what it can do unless you’re willing to contort yourself into a very specific workflow. For most casual users those limitations aren’t an issue and the advantages of the form factor outweigh the deficits. But when you charge MBPro money for a device the trade-offs sting. As @jsnell says, the best solution would be to just let us virtualize macOS on an iPad Pro when using it in certain modes https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/05/the-ipad-pro-is-no-longer-the-future-so-whats-next/

@john @film_girl I don't think this is on Apple, the filesystem has been exposed for developers and users on iPad for years now. iCloud or on device. Files app. If you're using an app that doesn't let you save there, that's on the developer.

@gruber I don't know the WaPo reporters on the AI/self-driving car story, but it's pretty clear expertise in technology reporting and editing has crashed with all the buyouts of experienced tech folks (think of a single one left you considered top of their field 5 to 10 years ago), people having left mainstream mags/newspapers for inside work at companies (Apple, Google, Alphabet, etc.), research, or…laid off from the places they went to. I don't think this story would have passed 20 years ago.

If you're curious about the current state of cleaning up an AI transcript, here's the diff from the latest Apple results call. (I ended up finishing about 10 minutes behind live.)

Takeaways: Machine transcription is vastly better than it used to be (especially with things like numbers), but there are still hallucinations and misunderstandings. But it sure beats what I used to do, which was literally type every word that was said.

What are the alternatives to Dropbox that are:

  • Truly cross platform. Like you can use it on a Linux VPS or iPhone.
  • Allow for collaborative folders, not just one-way sharing.
  • Encrypted, and private.
  • Do not require self-hosting some bullshit.
