Labs (and their famous/infamous open hackathons of the mid-2000's was an era full of missed opportunities - Yahoo!'s competitive advantage was (for the time) a nearly universal identity that tens of millions of people (if not hundreds of millions) used and trusted and seemed poised to help power all kinds of innovative and largely open apps and sites (remember Yahoo! Pipes? etc)
