I struggle, I really do, because I love it when an artist is willing to trust their audience and leave things unsaid. Subtext! Mysteries, with solutions which are initially nonobvious yet satisfying once you can see them! Apparent contradictions which communicate larger underlying truths once interrogated! I will make efforts to interpret art this way even when the art doesn't strictly deserve it. I make it work.
I can't do this with The Star Wars Prequels. They simply didn't do the groundwork.
@mcc i kinda wonder if this (and up thread from the linked post re:unbelievable scifi) happened bc these were one of the earliest movies to heavily use cgi for environments, which meant that there were fewer instances for someone to cut in and go “this doesn’t make sense” or “we need to establish this better”) the way you might with more ppl on set seeing the results
@mcc@onelson I've always thought that Lucas gets too much credit for the whole thing. He made this campy space wizard nonsense plot in the 70s that went on to create a huge vibrant universe around it. But that feels like it happened more in spite of him than because of him.
@xavdid@onelson I think he did bring useful things to the project but I think it's also been more than adequately documented by now that the original Star Wars was a collaboration between many different people who brought different useful viewpoints to the design/production process and the prequels were very much just What George Says Goes. For all we know, the prequels might have been better if he'd still had coequal collaborators pushing back on him instead of being Designated Auteur
