I'm doing some monitor shopping and am looking for recs. I do , so I look at code and browsers all day. Priority is for screen real estate and text sharpness. There's a budget, but it's sizeable enough to not be a (big) factor here.

Anyone have big recs or feelings?

I’m thinking my next project may be storing and using my own TV/movie watching data.

xavdid,
@xavdid@mastodon.social avatar

@cory I do this! It's great to be able to own the whole stack (besides what you source from tmdb). It's what powers https://david.reviews

xavdid,
@xavdid@mastodon.social avatar

@cory I've got this: https://xavd.id/blog/post/static-review-site-with-airtable/

Everything is backed by airtable. I don't think I've written in detail about the schemas, but it's nothing too crazy. I use Zapier to populate all the media info from tmdb (year, poster, name, etc) and then a shortcut + a zap to mark when I've watched something.

I should really detail the whole thing sometime!

xavdid,
@xavdid@mastodon.social avatar

@cory totally possible! And caching everything yourself means you don't have to worry about them changing their schema or limits. It's nice to decouple your site from theirs a bit

Fairly successful viewing tonight in ! Pretty cold and a fair amount of car traffic (which meant light in our faces), but got some good pictures. Pictures are more vibrant than what we saw with the naked eye, but it was still fun (and cold).

Everything is unedited off an iPhone 13 Pro.

Re: The primary positive way in which people engage with the Star Wars prequels is by attempting to essentially write fanfic in hope of explaining apparent plot holes https://mastodon.social/@onelson/112384671651965851

xavdid,

@mcc @onelson I've always thought that Lucas gets too much credit for the whole thing. He made this campy space wizard nonsense plot in the 70s that went on to create a huge vibrant universe around it. But that feels like it happened more in spite of him than because of him.

Anybody use sqlite3? I'm trying to open an sqlite3 directory to which I have read but not write access, and the first thing I do is type ".tables", and it says "Error: attempt to write a readonly database". I could sudo to the user that owns the file, but then I get a little nervous because I don't want to write to the database, I just want to read it. If I write to it right now that probably means I'm breaking something. Is there a way to interact with a sqlite3 database in readonly mode?

@agiletortoise I was thinking the same thing, but also saw the below article making the rounds. So on the one hand, I want to learn the new thing. On the other hand, I've gotten pretty good at passwords and they're much more of a known quantity. 🤷‍♂️

Welp, kid managed to get a drone stuck about 50ft up in a tree. Thus, further reconfirming my earlier claim (prior to him wasting his money on it) that drones are, in fact, the worst toy in the whole toy universe.

xavdid,

@dabeaz unironically, getting my little drone out of a tree in the park (in front of a crowd of onlookers) is maybe the most fun I had with it. Everyone clapped!

The end of season 2 is the conclusion of the main story and is a very fitting end. Though I'm sure they'd have liked to do more, you could tell me they'd ended on purpose and I'd believe you

agiletortoise, to random
@agiletortoise@mastodon.social avatar

As a person who did not watch it, asking honestly, was “Game of Thrones” a good show, or a shared experience? No one seems to talk about it now, or want to rewatch it. Is it fair to put it in the “Lost” bin and not bother or should I consider it?

xavdid,
@xavdid@mastodon.social avatar

@agiletortoise it's a little bit of both. Most of the run is pretty good fantasy prestige TV. (They eventually overtook the books and thus had to write their own ending, which went badly.)

But, it was also helped that it was THE SHOW for so long. Could always watch with friends on Sunday and talk about it Monday at work, and that was fun.

Would I start it today? Probably; it was genuinely good for a while! And there's some cultural context you'll have afterwards.

    @robb FWIW, brew Python isn't really meant to be used that way: https://justinmayer.com/posts/homebrew-python-is-not-for-you/

    per the node-gyp thread (https://github.com/nodejs/node-gyp/issues/2869), the solution seems to be to do a global pip install setuptools with whatever Python is available globally.

    Your approach fixes the immediate problem, but I worry it'll lead readers to more fragile/complex situations down the road.

    @atpfm hopefully an intersting for @siracusa: why did apple stop charging for major OSX upgrades?

    As far as I could tell, they went from $129 (most cats) to $30 (last couple of cats) down to free (CA locations).

    I realize the software landscape was very different then (OSs came on CDs) but a paid upgrade system seems like it would fragment the userbase much more than we have today.
