Apple keynote first thoughts:

A big new iPad Pro with the new keyboard would be great but I checked and it’s $1848 which is $500+ more than a new 15” MacBook Air, and I didn’t see any mention of MagSafe charging being added to iPads.

If Apple made a home dock wireless charger/holder like the Google tablets have, I’d buy one for the kitchen counter as a family Apple Home controller/recipe lookup screen that is always charged and ready to play tv/movies when undocked.

@mathowie I have an original 12.9” iPad Pro and it’s been great for 7 years. It’s definitely showing its age and is EOL on iOS. As much as it pains me to spend so much money on a new one, the keyboard and pencil are great for me. I also use it for music recording and 3d modeling. I feel like this will be another 7 year iPad for me.

@chrishuck what app(s) are you modeling in on the iPad?

@duganj Just Shapr3D for quick modeling of ideas for personal stuff when I travel. It’s way more convenient when sitting in an airport or on a plane. If I’m at home, I just do it in FreeCAD because I have my actual computer.

@mathowie I guess the Magic Keyboard for iPad is like a MagSafe charger, but like you said it’s not cheap

Unfortunately for Apple, iPads don't "wear out" or need replacement like phones and computers do in my life. I still happily watch YouTube and Plex every night before bed on my (purchased used) 2019 iPad Pro with a Magic Keyboard that also doubles as a decent travel computer.

A bigger, better screen is about the only feature that would cause me to upgrade, since it feels like iPads can run 5-10 years just fine for viewing Safari and playing back video, but the price points are too high.

@mathowie Dude, my 2013 iPad won't accept iOS updates anymore. I'm so mad, it WORKS FINE for my needs, otherwise; so now I can no longer use it for what I bought it for.

@ninavizz @mathowie Phone not iPad but one of us has an older iPhone and it will no longer run the NYT games or Airbnb which require a more up to date iOS

@steveportigal @mathowie My partner was sent a free iPhone by Verizon, once his was no longer supported. Which, he was still annoyed by, as he far preferred the older/smaller form-factor. I really, really do wish Apple would see those of us that prefer the dinky form factors, more.

@ninavizz @mathowie Oh I'm not sure what I'll have to give up when either of us upgrades. No more thumbprint button? No more lightning connectors? Our current SIM is too large to simply plop into a new slot? And yes - form factor is a big one I hadn't even started to worry about yet!

@steveportigal @mathowie iOS comes with a faux "Home" button for transitioners—and I still haven't deactivated mine. I've had it on for over 2yrs, now.

I've been iPhone-only since it premiered in 2007, and the up-swipe to unlock the screen is just too un-intuitive. Still peeved that Ive disbanded the Human Factors team.

@ninavizz @steveportigal @mathowie I prefer the smaller form factor because my hands are small. I continually drop the larger phone because of that. I also sometimes have to use two hands because I can't reach certain buttons. Very obvious the bigger phones are designed for men's hands and not women's or smaller people. Amazing the company ignores this so completely.

Over the last ten years I've bought three different iPads, all with pencils and never once used the Apple Pencil on them for more than five minutes. I get that they're killer for artists and people illustrating comics and stuff, but my handwriting is godawful (thanks computers!) and I'll never need another Apple Pencil again.

@mathowie I keep hoping to use the pencil some day to learn better handwriting but I never make the time

@steveriggins honestly, someone could make a fun game out of it, like Mavis Beacon Teaches Writing or something
