oh cool, the first data from the National Audit of Mobile Coverage (first time govt has independently tried to map mobile coverage in Australia instead of relying on the telcos to self-report) is now live

@decryption oooh I just finished reading about that in a fancy pants "online" newsletter I read.

@decryption this is very @Kels_316 and my areas

@decryption It'd be nice if they separated Telstra and Telstra Wholesale. I'd kind of like to know what I'm giving up by going with a MVNO on the Telstra network.

@decryption@aus.social avatar

@jamesh yeah, ditto the optus and tpg MVNOs

@jamesh@aus.social avatar

@decryption I didn't think Optus and Vodafone restricted MVNOs to a similar degree to Telstra.

Anyway, it's good to see that there's good Telstra and Optus coverage for Carnac Island off the coast of Perth: an island with no human settlements and populated by tiger snakes and seagulls.

@decryption Any idea why they have Optus, Telstra and TPG but no Vodafone?

matthewboniface,
@matthewboniface@aus.social avatar

@decryption Oh, just realised that VF is a part of TPG - I must have not paid attention to this when it happened - or failed to store it in my long term memory ☺️

@decryption@aus.social avatar

@matthewboniface yep, TPG purchased Vodafone Hutchinson Australia (which used to be 3 until they merged with Vodafone to create VHA).

@decryption "not enough crowdsourced data" for where I am. I can confirm that it's patchy.

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

@trib will be interesting once they start using their own vehicle & australia post vehicle data

purserj,
@purserj@aus.social avatar

@decryption @trib honestly surprised they haven't reached out to Google, surely the street car would be capturing data like that

trib,
@trib@aus.social avatar

@purserj @decryption maybe not up my road... Google Street View terminates at the intersection with the Princes Highway. But pretty much everywhere civilised.

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

@trib @purserj plus I don't think they'd necessarily be logging that info just for the hell of it

purserj,
@purserj@aus.social avatar

@decryption @trib I wonder. They used to (probably still do) capture wifi network information as they drive passed.

Wouldn't be too much of a stretch to capture Mobile network data. If nothing else, it helps to map where people can and can't access their services

Can compare Telstra, Optus & TPG. Telstra has a lot more fringe/kinda works coverage than Optus. TPG just nowhere to be seen.

@decryption Doesn't look like it covers dead zones on the train line that I 100% know to be present
