I was at the grocery store last night and every checkout line was very backed up. A pair of women with an extremely full shopping cart got into the 15-items-or-less line and caused further delays by asking questions about the prices of many items, and having the wrong items for coupons they had (necessitating them going back to the aisles to get the right items).

The customer in front of me, who was buying a gallon of milk and a box of cereal got increasingly disgruntled over how long it was taking and started talking shit to the cashier for letting the women bring their giant order through the express line.

The cashier didn't really know what to say, so he was deflecting, and I felt bad for him. When he left to go get a bottle of alcohol from the locked liquor cases, the disgruntled customer turned to me and apologized for making a scene.

I told him it was fine, but he shouldn't be getting mad at the cashier because retail employees aren't really allowed to say anything to bad customers.

When the cashier came back, the disgruntled customer apologized to him several times, and said he knows he's just trying to do his job.

And then he started talking shit to the two women instead.

@MLE_online All our grocery stores offer multiple self-checkout lanes, probably about 8 self-checkout stations. I love it. Assisted checkout is also available.👍🏼

@Ronguest We have self checkout here, too, but you are not allowed to use them to purchase alcohol, which I was

@MLE_online Our stores have a at least one ‘helper’ in the self-checkout area who assists in verifying age or dealing with scanning issues. Seems to work well for me.

@Ronguest It's against the law here, even with a cashier assisting

Honestly though, people who take giant orders through the express line deserve exile

@MLE_online some of the worst shame I’ve ever felt is when I was clearly over the line for the express lane, but just barely under the line of “oh no go fuck your self” and didn’t realize I was in the express lane until just before the cashier started ringing up my items.

It was the Midwest so nobody said anything but I paid and did the walk of shame to the car

@crazybutable I think most people wouldn't judge you for being over unless it was egregiously over. If you have 20 things in a 15-items-or-less line and you don't cause unnecessary delays, i don't think people would care much.
