According to AdWeek, OpenAI offers publishers prominance with payment: Not pay-to-play but get-paid-to-play (and don't sue or lobby). Issues: Credibilty/bias in results and exclusion of small, Black, Latino, community, startup media.

Rather than all these early-birds-get-the-worm deals with AI companies, the news industry -- and the culture -- would be better off creating a collective API for news to license to AI companies. But news companies never collaborate, especially not with each other.

@jeffjarvis OpenAI doesn't need API's or to pay them, they can just scrape their sites the way they've always done. There is no legal precedent to enforce them to compensate anyone for "reading " the text of websites Your point is moot.
