One of the most pernicious narratives in American political circles is that the Clinton era Oslo Accords "solved" the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and would have provided for a Palestinian state by now if only Palestinians had cooperated. In fact, the agreement was always deeply flawed, deliberately did not address any of the major issues in contention, and was rendered moot soon after the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin.

The Oslo Accords were undermined from the beginning through their vagueness, by the assassination of Rabin, the rise of right-wing hardliners like Netanyahu, the dramatic and continued expansion of West Bank settlements, Israel's refusal to withdraw militarily, Israel isolating Gaza and the West Bank politically and economically, the corruption and complicity of Abbas and the Palestinian Authority, the Second Intifada, ongoing Hamas terror attacks, and Israeli favoritism by the US and Europe.

Netanyahu has played Fatah / Abbas and Hamas against each other as a divide and conquer strategy. Neither are popular with Palestinians, but elections have been repeatedly stymied and Netanyahu has used the violence as a pretext for Israeli military crackdowns and to avoid his own political / legal problems. That includes the ongoing destruction of Gaza in response to the 10/7 Hamas terror attack, which Netanyahu's government was warned about beforehand.

There's no question Hamas needs to be removed and disbanded. The vast majority of Palestinians living in Gaza would agree, as they live in fear of them. There's no love lost for Abbas either. But the peace process has been sabotaged by successive Israeli governments with no intention of granting Palestinian statehood. Netanyahu has exacerbated tensions for decades to forestall a two state solution and to keep himself in office despite a majority of Israelis demanding he resign.

So the Oslo Accords didn't resolve anything and many believe they were never meant to.

Nor has Israel ever negotiated in good faith, as it believes any practical one or two state solution would cost much more than it would gain in terms of security and stability. It doesn't have to either, as the US perpetually defends it.

Meanwhile, Palestinians are fractured and suffering under both the Israeli occupation turned genocide and corrupt leaders they can't get rid of, as elections are denied.

@gwynnion

Good and unbiased summary of the developments since the Oslo Accords. Thanks for that!
