Not sure how unpopular this opinion is but: Using an 's for possessive is the more intuitive thing with "it's" despite being "wrong" and I think we should just all rebel and do that.

@bkardell So, you would use "Her's" and "They's" as well ? and hit the wall trying to decide what to do with "his'" + "'s".
That genitive case mark on the word may actually come from germanic languages. I prefer using a preposition word (there would be "of it" instead for relationship or possession).
Alternate way is to get rid of 's and 're and always use "is" and "are".

@caribou Yeah, I'm not suggesting switching them all, I'm saying pretty much what the linked video at the bottom of this says ~"yeah, we recommend its, but also it is all weird and in flux and there are plenty of reputable uses of possessive it's and they are kind of... fine?".

@bkardell "It" is a bit puzzling indeed because the possessive pronoun looks so much similar to personal pronoun+'s, but there's no reason to use the 's genitive on this pronoun and not the other (he/she/they or even I/you). Admitting grammar mistakes as language evolution makes sense when it corrects a bug in the grammar or simplifies it, not so much if it creates an exception + a possible confusion with another meaning.
Also, it seems that only native english speakers make this mistake. Why?

@caribou 'tis a mystery

@bkardell it feels arbitrary, but i kinda like that it creates a distinction between the possessive and the contraction

the one i'd really like to change is when some proper noun ends with an "S" and suddenly doesn't require an apostrophe 'S, as if it were a plural. it makes no sense!

bkardell,
@bkardell@toot.cafe avatar

@hi_mayank Let's go back to the OG don't use it's as a contraction and use 'tis

@bkardell it's its. if its is it's, it's confusing.

@bkardell nooooope

bkardell,
@bkardell@toot.cafe avatar

@Meyerweb What's the reason it should have a weird possessive form tho?

Meyerweb,
@Meyerweb@mastodon.social avatar

@bkardell None of the forms are weird, though.
