The web turns 35 this year…. Wait what? I used Tim Berners-Lee’s first webbrowser on the NeXT. I feel old.

@html5test goodness me, really? You were in the game that early? My first was lynx in a terminal and mosaic in X, in 1994. I never used the original one! Nice.

Remember in Wayne’s World when they had “The Shitty Beatles”?

I’ve just watched the new Dr Who episode 2

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@jonhicks I think I saw them as a tribute band in a dodgy pub a couple of years ago :) But I quite liked that the vibe the show went for was to be enough them that you knew who they were meant to be, without putting in tons of effort to make them indistinguishable.

(I wasn’t as moved by the episode as I felt I ought to have been. Defeating evil through a meaningful chord is ground zero for pathos and it didn’t deliver. Still reserving judgement on whether I’m super into the new series or not.)

Not sure how unpopular this opinion is but: Using an 's for possessive is the more intuitive thing with "it's" despite being "wrong" and I think we should just all rebel and do that.

Grrrr. Google Slides doesn't support WebP.

Why, yes, my talk prep is proceeding nicely, thanks!

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent also beware -- if you're not presenting off your own laptop (I imagine at EMF you would be, but just in case) and if you share the google slides with someone else, and those slides have a private video in, you have to share the video with them too separately. It isn't shared along with the slides. This bit me half an hour before going on stage at a conference, meaning panickedly trying to fix it from my phone...

Researching purple metals for a thing (or possibly a novel, although I can’t see where I get the time) and there are a few interesting possibilities. Purple bronze is probably a no-no (the various varieties of it have all sorts of mad stuff in the alloy like molybdenum, and I can’t see how you’d make it at that tech level) and Japanese shakudo is cool but the patina wears off with handling. But I may have found the answer in hepatizon, which nobody knows how to make any more. Cool.

Many years ago (2012!) I was invited to be part of “The Pastry Box Project”, a writing project which "every year gathers 30 people who are each influential in their field and asks them to share thoughts regarding what they do" once a month. It's since dropped off the web, but I was asked about something I wrote there and it's still at archive.org and on Github. So I dug my posts out of it and republished them on my site for ease of reference. Others could do this too!

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@sally I thought the same! Also, I discovered that they're all conveniently markdown files at github juuuust after I extracted them all out of the archive.org pages and reformatted them, which should hopefully save you some work :)

@sil@mastodon.social avatar

OK, UK types, it’s council elections day. When you go out to vote, remember that you need to take photo ID with you. Yes, it is bad that you have to do so because it harms people without IDs more than it helps stop basically-nonexistent “voting fraud”, and yes this is a flagrantly partisan measure to benefit the Tories, and yes it was put through Parliament with barely any discussion or opposition, but you still have to do it. Don’t take it out on polling station volunteers, either.

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@simon hey, it's not me you've gotta convince, it's CCHQ. (Also, here at least, Andy Street isn't a nutter. I don't agree with him on a bunch of stuff, and he's not getting voted for, but he's not a nutter.)

Desperately trying to think of how to describe my thoughts in a way that doesn’t require ten thousand words. I need to write something in detail about this that doesn’t try to express how I think of the good web in a one sentence cliche. Meanwhile, go tell Molly what you think.

Listening to The Rest Is Entertainment who are going on about the new Taylor Swift album. Is it any good?
(Can’t decide whether I want to ask @film_girl this question :))

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl cheers. I read a couple of things about how there's a lot of story going on, none of which I will understand, hence asking :) Still, nothing stopping me listening just for the music with no awareness whatsoever of what it all means, which is the next plan...!

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl yow. This is... well, it's something. Half way through I was thinking, is it good for the world that a furious, visceral diary entry from a 14-year-old is getting published as a song? But I forgot how good the poetry can be. "It wasn't sexy once it was forbidden" and "you kicked out the stage lights but you're still performing" are lovely. I mean, not lovely. Incandescently angry. But lovely. I guess now it sucks to be that guy forever and ever.

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Advantage with being Taylor Swift: you can do what you want. I would hope that if the guy has a gram of sensitivity that he might take a long hard look at himself as a result of this. Two grams and maybe he will do that and not pretend to enjoy the notoriety in front of his mates. Dunno whether that's too much to hope for, though.

A while back in Learn Privacy, I said (https://web.dev/learn/privacy/fingerprinting#only_rely_on_the_user-agent_string_for_coarse_information):
“this results in every browser pretending to be every other browser, [and] claims, among other things, to be Mozilla/5.0, a browser which was released at the same time that the first astronauts boarded the International Space Station”. In case you thought I was lying or something check out this excellent little tale from @html5test about how the UA string can be entirely lies. Don’t trust it.

A fascinating story about the browser wars. It’s a tale where the User-Agent string takes centre stage, revealing its unpredictable nature and the need for vigilance when relying on it.

Anyone know if it's possible in a Bash or zsh terminal to have a command run that pre-populates the command buffer with a second, editable command that, when executed, gets added to the user's shell history - so they can hit "up" to see and run it again?

My "llm cli" tool /almost/ does this - but commands it runs don't end up in the shell history which is annoying https://simonwillison.net/2024/Mar/26/llm-cmd/

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@simon history -s “command” should do that, although I don’t know whether zsh has the history command? I would hope it does though

Passkeys were hot last year, don’t seem to be catching on, here’s one view of why that is. Dark and sobering but convincing: https://fy.blackhats.net.au/blog/2024-04-26-passkeys-a-shattered-dream/

sil,
@sil@mastodon.social avatar

@objc @timbray as far as I can tell, though, I can't move between OSes. If I set up my current phone as holding my passkeys, and then I change to a different phone (OS), I am just flat-out stuck; I cannot export my passkeys, or store them myself in some neutral format, or export them to a different device. I might be wrong on this, but every time I've asked I've got that answer, or no answer. If that's changed then I'll be happy to look again.
