Why US hockey players often speak with “fake Canadian” accents

They don't want to sound Canadian, but like a hockey player—a "linguistic persona."

@arstechnica
‘Canadian speech patterns are well-known: pronouncing "out" as "oot," for example, or "about" as "aboot,"’

It’s more like American hearing impairment.

The stereotypical Canadian pronunciation of “out” &””about” skews (slightly) to that of “boat” not “boot”!

@arstechnica My guess is that something similar happens for American's playing . They pick up specific terms and pronounce them the same way as their Australian teammates.
