@chemoelectric The Supreme Court can hear a state appeal: https://www.uscourts.gov/about-federal-courts/types-cases/appeals, as they did in Bush v. Gore concerning the Florida ballot count since it had federal implications. They decide if a case violates a principle of law. And the right-wing SCOTUS will decide anything they want to. The so-called "public lust" you refer are just folks trying to save their democratic way of life and making the best of their own lives.
