I’m at a bit of a crossroads with The Golem and the Jinni.

On the one hand, I’m enjoying it.

On the other hand, it does slow at times and takes a bit of getting through to a point where it pulls me in again.

Those lulls are short, but sometimes the active interest is short as well.

I want to know what’s going to happen but I’m still only edging toward half way through it after weeks of reading it because of my slow reading speed.

Had I known before starting it as an ebook that it was 656 printed paperback pages, I probably wouldn’t have read it just for its sheer size and knowing how long that would take me to get through. But since I’m half way done, it’s… maybe worth the extra time to finish?

But that “maybe” is the stumbling block. What else of stronger appeal may I be able to read in that same time instead?

It’s an unexpectedly slow burn story that I’m trying to weigh pros and cons of finishing.

Maybe I could listen to the rest as an audiobook instead.

Anyone got any suggestions for good places to get audio books? I know Audible is the go-to, but last I checked it wasn’t cheap and you were limited to getting just a few titles per month. Didn’t seem like a great deal.

I’ll see if the library has a copy of the audiobook to check out, as well.

More and more leaning to a friend’s stance from decades ago that he won’t read anything over 300 pages. There’s appeal to that.

jessicaddooley,

@reay The is a great bet for . Compare the titles available in Libby and Hoopla, and borrow with your library card. You may be able to sign up for digital library cards from more than one library in your state to expand the range of titles available. The Libby app makes switching between library cards and available titles particularly painless.

Thanks for the suggestions. The local library does have audiobooks available, but all for this book are currently out, and the ETA for one to be available is 7 weeks. Even at my pokey pace, I’d finish reading the second half way before then.

My the neighbouring city, bordering about a ten minute drive from me, is the best chance at another library resource, but they don’t have as many copies as we do here.

I’ll keep looking around.

MindCreatesMeaning,

@reay https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby and https://www.hoopladigital.com are two great options.

Both have native mobile apps.

Both work through your local library cards.

I find that between the two apps I can access 97% of the audiobook titles I've searched for.

You can also request titles if you don't see them listed!

@MindCreatesMeaning Appreciated, but the audiobook isn’t currently available at the library, it seems. 🤷‍♂️

voices_by_jerry,

@reay Chirp is another source of often inexpensive audiobooks, but not (inexpensively) the one you're currently reading, alas.

@voices_by_jerry Good to know. Thanks!
