I was going to do a "wait and see" approach to seeing how threads was going to pan out. Fortunately, they've given us a preview of how they will be run before they've connected themselves to the Fediverse.

And now I've seen enough. I will be preemptively blocking the domain on my self-hosted instance.

They've not only decided to host right wing hate groups but are actively coddling them. I'm not surprised of course, but it's good to see this with my own eyes before making any rash decisions.

@zalasur On the larger instances I think where my comfort level is coming to rest, is to limit out of the gate but no complete block. My reasoning:

  • The risk of harmful, unsolicited posts reaching us is too great to allow them to enter the federated timeline here, or to reach anyone except direct followers. 🧵

@zalasur * Users on the limiting instances would have to approve follow requests originating from Threads. A good thing too given point 1 above.

  • Social graph scraping concerns are legitimate, but in a Fediblock discussion they are (mostly) a red herring. If you use anything that’s connected to the Internet, Big Tech has your social graph, and blocking Threads at per instance levels will be like trying to stop a rolling freight train with a toothpick.

@zalasur * I do not want to see impenetrable communication barriers raised between Mastodon users who want to follow specific Threads users and vice versa. Limiting Threads still allows those convos to happen between people who specifically choose to engage in them. But a complete Fediblock would bar all of them for all users on that instance, forever. I can’t support that “sledgehammer” remedy where other more productive and more effective surgical ones are available.

@zalasur Lastly: unless we are 100% committed to literally physically disconnecting ourselves from the rest of the capitalist-driven online world, we need to work out granular, tailored ways to manage a coexistence within that space. /🧵

@zalasur
For a friend who's joining Threads because he's already on FB and IG and "it's easy", do we have some examples of hate groups that have been embraced?

@darthdzl Libs of Tik Tok was one of them. There was another I've forgotten already. Basically most of them are flocking over there now. It's probably easier to count who among them isn't joining up.

@zalasur
Thanks. I'll hand that one over, but if you find out anymore, I'd really appreciate hearing them. I'm not over there too look, and signing up isn't high on my list right now. 🙂
