Off to see #Barbie 😃

I really enjoyed . It was not at all when I was expecting and in a good way.

It’s not easy to compare it to another movie because it’s so different and deals with so many deep themes. Kind of feels like the LEGO movie crossed with Joe vs the Volcano, one of my favorite symbolic films of all time.

Both Robbie and Gossling were amazing. Finally, kudos to Mattel for having a gigantic sense of humor about themselves and allowing the moving to be made in the first place. Go see it. 🦩🏖️👍

It’s plainly obvious that Greta Gerwig wrote and directed Barbie from a deeply personal place. She used her memories to inform her creativity and craft a very unique and symbolic story in .

The same can be said about John Patrick Shanley and Joe vs The Volcano. Joe is def an acquired taste but like Gerwig, the film was a total labor of love for him, dealing with big themes. Some of the best movies come from these profound places within their creators.

One final word about , but only tangentially. When I went to see Indy and the Dial of Destiny I couldn’t catch so much of the dialog during the film it really frustrated me.

So for I decided to ask for a closed captioning system. It was quite an unwieldy piece of equipment but was very very cool.

Was like I was seeing the captions 3D projected in front of the screen. Like Robocop’s HUD almost. Really helped me enjoy the first 1/2 of the movie until the battery died. :-/

edmistond,

@gedeonm Yeah, the various captioning systems at theaters are a little awkward. I haven’t used the glasses (I think that’s a Regal thing?) but I’ve used the Captiviews at Cinemark and they’re pretty nice when they work.

If it wasn’t $3500 I’d say the Vision Pro would be my ideal solution to getting a movie experience with captions. 😉

@gedeonm One of the many reasons I don't go to theaters any more. I can wait the 2-3 months for it to be available for rental, streaming, or purchase.

cwagdev,

@gedeonm oh that’s nice! 📝

roisinmaeve,

@gedeonm AMC in the last few years has started doing showings that just put the subtitles on the screen as you’d have at home. Learned about them by accident when I saw No Time to Die at one of the showings that had this.

@roisinmaeve oh wow. Did not know that.

@CStamp Yeah the battery dying was disappointing and I’d know better for next time. Really improved my enjoyment of the film for the part they were working. Recommended.

    cwagdev,

@gedeonm my wife works at a movie theater and drew the same parallel to LEGO movie with only seeing bits and pieces. Sounds like something I’d enjoy.
