Listen, if you’re a white person, and you think you’ve had Szechuan food, you probably haven’t.

Most of the Szechuan restaurants in the USA lack a basic component: spiciness.

I say this because a friend from out of town just went to a Szechuan restaurant in Vancouver, thought it was going to be business as usual, and now he’s doubled over because the spice is too much for him.

He tells me, it’s so bad, that he feels the spice eking out of his pores. 🤣

edmistond,
@edmistond@fosstodon.org avatar

@atomicpoet I went to a Chinese place in Asiatown here in Cleveland last year, ordered the “dry chili chicken” off their Szechuan menu which came with a ton of the little peppers mixed in.

It was delicious, but I HURT that night.

So yeah, totally believe you there, Mexican and Thai don’t bother me that much. 😅

The problem with trying to sell developer tooling is that developers have no purchasing authority

Salesperson needs to spend $1,000? No big deal.
Finance needs to spend $100,000? No big deal.
Engineer wants to buy a $50 book? They need forms signed from their VP in triplicate.

edmistond,
@edmistond@fosstodon.org avatar

@acdha @dfeldman Yeah, I was sympathetic to their point of view and need to make some money, but also I will crawl over broken glass to avoid having to submit expense reports… 😉

This is from a C-suite person at a company you’ve heard of. They’re responsible for product.

And THIS is why I have spent the last year developing proficiency in using LLMs as part of my development workflow:

It’s great to be able to detect a crock of shit.

There’s no universe where AI makes features “functionally free.”

The complexity of a software product cannot be handwaved away through magic tensor beans. Features are more than just code. Features are a social contract with the user.

Been curious about what it's like to use Bluefin? Here's a quick tour of it, walking through some of the main changes we make to Silverblue!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_yyyUMecwo

For more stability, the Bluefin custom image defaults to GTS (grand touring support), meaning that we hang back one release of Fedora. It brings stability in general, but specifically to all the GNOME extensions we use.

@jorge Love the work you've all been doing on this. One point of minor confusion for me: if I run something like Bluefin DX or Kinoite and I also want to play an occasional game, where does Bazzite come into the picture? Should I install that as an image to get a bunch of things preconfigured or should I just be installing Steam/Proton/etc off Flatpak?

Looks like the docs have changed a bit since I last looked into this, but it's a bit confusing. Thanks! :)

edmistond,
@edmistond@fosstodon.org avatar

@jorge Okay, I thought that might be the case - what threw me a little was it looked there were Bazzite container images you could install.

Going right to Steam is probably less complexity. :)

Thanks again!

I extracted some of my favorite quotes from the Oxide and Friends podcast episode I recorded with @bcantrill and @ahl and posted them on my blog, along with a detailed description of how I generated the transcript (MacWhisper) and found the quotes (Anthropic's Claude) https://simonwillison.net/2024/Jan/17/oxide-and-friends/

edmistond,
@edmistond@fosstodon.org avatar

@simon This was an interesting writeup, thanks! Kind of a related question, I don't know if you've done this at all - being deaf, I often pull down a podcast and use Whisper to generate a transcript so I don't have to read captioning at real-time speeds. For podcasts with multiple speakers, it can be hard to follow though - do you know of any GOOD tools for running speaker diarization/id locally? I'm aware of pyannote but have never gotten it to work for me…

Just tried @simon's llm tool. Nice and simple CLI!

Next up: seeing how well local models work on my M1.

edmistond,
@edmistond@fosstodon.org avatar

@pamelafox @simon LLM is a great little tool I just started messing with recently too.

Depending on which M1 you have, ollama and llamafile both work pretty well. I have an OG M1 MBP with 16gb and 7b models run acceptably, haven’t tried something bigger than that though.

The fact that 99% of my RPC and event serialization has to be done in json is blowing my mind.

Where did we go wrong??

“It’s so simple” they say, wtf?

edmistond,
@edmistond@fosstodon.org avatar

@mnl 🌶️ take: in a lot of ways, XML was and is better than JSON: it has far better tooling around it (schemas, XSLT, etc), and is still at least somewhat human readable… but everyone decided they hated all the angle brackets, so instead we got JSON.

I’m not a business analyst, but Mac sales being down so much feels to me like a clear combination of 2 things.

  1. COVID got a lot of people to upgrade over 2020-2021

  2. The M1 lineup came out during that period and was so good basically no one with an M1 is itching to upgrade

There was an unprecedented event combined with the greatest performance upgrade…ever(?) in the Mac’s history all at once.

edmistond,
@edmistond@fosstodon.org avatar

@matt Yeah, the M1 lineup is pretty fantastic and I’m in no hurry to replace my 13” M1 MBP. I wish it supported more displays and had more than 16GB of RAM for messing with Ollama but those are my only complaints… and frankly, a displaylink adapter and some OpenAI credits are quite a bit cheaper. 😂

I usually upgrade on about a five year cycle.

So our Kenmore dishwasher of 20 years has finally given up the appliance ghost. Considering the lifetime of these things is around 12-15 years, we had a great run.

Now begins the arduous process of finding a replacement. If anyone has any serious recommendations about a reliable dishwasher brand / model I should look at, I would welcome the advice. Thx!

Thanks Thank You GIF by BLKBOK

edmistond,
@edmistond@fosstodon.org avatar

@gedeonm Yeah, the various captioning systems at theaters are a little awkward. I haven’t used the glasses (I think that’s a Regal thing?) but I’ve used the Captiviews at Cinemark and they’re pretty nice when they work.

If it wasn’t $3500 I’d say the Vision Pro would be my ideal solution to getting a movie experience with captions. 😉
