Important: We need Your Input on the Future of the SocialHub

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/476057

The activity of the SocialHub community, like all other 'fediverse-substrate' bodies, has waned. From an active community to just a forum. Now a decision has to be made for the future of SocialHub. The options are stopping, be just a forum, or revitalize a vibrant community. The last option needs people willing and committed to do so. To step up for the sake of Fediverse Futures.

One thing that I'm curious about with SocialHub: would it benefit more from itself being a federated communications hub? Would SocialHub benefit from migrating to Lemmy, so that we can all contribute to conversations there from our respective spaces on the fediverse?

Oh for sure it would benefit a lot. A migration to Lemmy has come up in the past.. though it would mean losing a ton of community/forum management features. But there's movement towards federation of SocialHub, with The Pavilion who wrote an ActivityPub plugin. It is enabled on the SocialHub and 2 categories are currently federating. The plugin will be developed further, and feedback is being collected. See:

Two more forum softwares are adding federation support: Flarum and nodeBB

Out of curiosity: which categories are currently supported? Is there a way to test interop with Lemmy and kbin?

Current functionality of the plugin is still rather limited. The following 2 categories federate:

But right now that only creates a toot on a new topic creation, and replies from the fediverse aren't becoming replies in the forum. Hellekin has experimented with it, and SocialHub is open to beta-test.

Thank you for clarifying. Hellekin may be interested in looking at how Lemmy and kbin are doing it, as having federation compatibility in long-form group communication platforms would really add an incredible amount of value.

Really, a sticking point is that platforms with Group actors really need to get together and ensure compatibility. This could be truly transformative for the fediverse as a whole.

Fully agree. Those doing Groups need to be continuously reminded about this compatibility. Tendency to "wheel reinvention" is high and co-creation is also not front and center in thinking with implementers, unfortunately. There's a Groups FEP created by Lemmy dev. I nudged Flarum, nodeBB and Discourse folks to come together. On SocialHub @trwnh gave some great insights. I hope more FEP's will be proposed, so that interop guarantees can be higher.

Oh, awesome! Thanks for the update!
