Zugyuk,

Welcome friend!

Draegur,

i wish i went through my entire history and deleted everything before closing my account.

Kecessa,

There’s extensions to do it but I think it’s even better to use one that edits all your history

Stealth your way into reddit HQ, find the server 🫠

@b3an@lemmy.world avatar

I did it to my porn account at least. Rip. 🕊️

squid_slime,
@squid_slime@lemmy.world avatar

got reddit front ends, no accounts needed same for redgif lol

casmael,

Bro that’s the longest password in the world

squid_slime,
@squid_slime@lemmy.world avatar

24 random letter upper and lower case, numbers and special characters. that is more than enough to stop brute force cracking. unless someones nuts and uses a server farm

mypasswordis1234,
@mypasswordis1234@lemmy.world avatar

He’s using a password manager (Keepass, in his case) probably with a long, randomly generated password for Reddit. This is a great cybersecurity practice.

SeabassDan,

Relevant username

casmael,

So Dan, tell me about your Seabass 🤔

SeabassDan,

It’s a play on words, I like fish and the name Dan.

Skanky,

100% this

Last count, i have well over 300 online accounts - and i don’t know the password for a single one of them, except for my main Google account and my password manager. It remembers all of them for me.

mypasswordis1234,
@mypasswordis1234@lemmy.world avatar

Same 😄 Except I don’t have a Google acc

First use a tool like Redact to edit (not delete) all of your comments if you want them as truly gone as they may possibly get.

squid_slime,
@squid_slime@lemmy.world avatar

I did on both accounts 🥲

ccunning,

Once you’ve edited your posts, what does deleting the account accomplish? Or is it just a self control measure like cutting up your credit card used to be?

xantoxis,

No matter who it is, if you’re no longer using a website or app of some kind, it’s best to permanently delete/disable your account. Before you do, scrub as much information as you can, such as deleting any credit card info or address/phone that’s on file. There’s a few reasons for this:

  • If your security choices (e.g. passwords/2fa) are not the best, someone may compromise your active account through normal means and impersonate you
  • Even if your security choices are very strong, at some point in the future the site might get compromised by more sophisticated attackers because either (a) the attackers get more sophisticated over time, or (b) the company responsible for account security gets lazier over time;
  • This is especially true if the site is eventually sold to a scammy company just trying to make a quick buck. And they all eventually get sold.
  • No matter who owns the company, at some point in the future your contact info will get used to try to market bullshit to you. If not them, then the data brokers they sell your info to.

Deleting the account blocks all of these problems (unless the company is particularly scummy, but what are you gonna do about it)

ccunning,

Got it. So if I never registered an email address or gave them a credit card and overwrote all my comments and used a randomly generated password then there’s basically no risk.

Just making sure I wasn’t missing something.

cant say this was something i gave any thought to, guess deleting reddit seemed like the default

GBU_28,

This won’t actually help. Any competent data engineer is already detecting bulk edits and reverting.

A proper tool would trickle changes over weeks

Inb4 they don’t actually delete your account… I’ve seen people dealing with their account still existing long after they requested it to be deleted.

squid_slime,
@squid_slime@lemmy.world avatar

I used powerdeletesuite, worked incredibly well

wetnoodle,
@wetnoodle@sopuli.xyz avatar

I did too, just got logged back into the account anyway

SpruceBringsteen,

I ran a script to over write and delete my comments, but left the account open as a placeholder.

Have still received comment replies to my posts twice. When I went to see the comment it was deleted.

dual_sport_dork,
@dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world avatar

When I did this I got a zillion automated PM’s from some bot whining about, “Please stop running a script on our sub!”

Yeah? Get fucked. I was tempted to run it again just to be an ass. But I have things to do.

DarkThoughts,

A lot of your old history is not accessible from within your comment history in your profile. Reddit is just broken spaghetti code in a lot of ways.

manuallybreathing,

if you request all of your reddit account data they provide you with every comment/ edited or deleted, from memory anyway

dont post things on the internet that you dont want other people to see, as a reminder

KairuByte,
@KairuByte@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

A soft delete is about the only sane way to handle this kind of information, to be honest. People already used the delete feature for harassment, but imagine if there was no way to see the deletions on Reddits side, a report of the harassment would mean nothing.

Yes, the right to be forgotten exists, but it’s much more in depth to create an account, harass someone in comments so it reaches their notifications, then request a deletion of the account. Vs just deleting the comment and doing it again and again.
