hukaulaba,

Finally got it to boot from disk. I'll update my wiki with the instructions shortly.

Rairii,

@hukaulaba ...a firepower system?!

have you dumped its openfirmware?!

hukaulaba,

@Rairii I have not yet. Do you know how that could be done? I did find a "fw.img" on the small FAT16 partition on the hard disk, but I haven't been able to verify if it matches what is in the flash.

For reference, the firmware version is: Version 03.03 1996-09-19,01:47:29

Rairii,

@hukaulaba btw: there should be two small fat16 partitions, the second one should contain bootloader, veneer and hal and the latter two might be useful and otherwise undumped.

the drivers in \winnt\system32\drivers in OS partition may also be helpful.

i found a dump of the ofw that someone else made, but it's incompatible with halfire somehow (crashing after jumping to kernel, which got misinterpreted as crsshing when loading cdfs as that's the last driver setupldr loads)

i know that you can dump the old firmware image before flashing a new one but i'd need to do some reversing to figure out how to dump the firmware image in software...

hukaulaba,

@Rairii I see only one FAT16 partition on the disk in this machine. This partition contains OSLoader, HAL, two versions of Veneer, and a bunch of HTML files that a student who previously used this must have accidentally saved there instead of on the NTFS volume. I was able to get manual booting working with one version of Veneer on disk but not the other. Both versions appear to differ from the one that's on the retail CD I have. Oddly, while the FAT16 partition is primary, the NTFS partition is extended.

When I have time later, I can dig through the drivers directory and see what's all there for archival. What might be the best well-known place to archive a copy of these files? I assume WinWorldPC would not want anything that is not an application or setup media.

Rairii,

@hukaulaba TWO versions of veneer that's both different to the one included with nt4?!

oh i want both of those and the hal lol, would be nice to bindiff haha

I guess the best place for them would be archive.org?

also, "a bunch of html files", and i guess that's why modern NT doesn't mount the system partition by default
