What can I expect when I return to after recovering from ? It's my first time and I have no idea what comes next or how much of a struggle it might be.

I'm beginning to feel normal again and hoping to start up this weekend. I know I'll have lost fitness and will have to take it slowly for a time.

Advice?

@awonder well that's alarming! Good to know. I was already planning an extremely slow ramp up, but now I'll be on the lookout for signs that I need to ease off and recover further. Thanks!

chuck,

@mlawton It took me a couple weeks before I felt I was back to 90% and then at least a month after that to get to 100%. Definitely a long tail. I forgot when I was diagnosed, but I was over most of my symptoms by the 23rd for a 10K I had been training for. You can see the impact in my time vs. Apr 10th. And even by May 7, I wasn’t back to normal. Took till May 21 before I was at that same pace before COVID. Don’t push anything; go in knowing it’ll take time to rebuild/recover.

@chuck even knowing I will likely struggle a bit, this is good to hear. It seems like most people need several weeks afterwards to get to feeling right again. Slow and steady I can manage, especially if I feel like there are better days ahead. 🍻

@mlawton i had some long COVID issues all last year. This year has been largely back to normal with the exception that after really hard workouts I often feel short of breath and extra tired for a couple or a few days.

@obrien_kat Americans have such an overly-simplistic, binary view of COVID. It’s probably due to the anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers, who argue it’s “just like the flu” and other willfully ignorant and reckless propaganda. Long COVID still seems understudied & underreported.

I don’t seem to have any complications at this point, but I also don’t know when I can really make a final determination.

I’m glad you’re doing better. 💪

@mlawton totally, it’s like death or you’re fine, no middle ground.
Hopefully you don’t. The majority of people don’t, but a minority that matters do. Take care, and thank you!

@mlawton i would err on side of caution. These may be helpful from a physiatrist I’ve been connected with for years who is a runner and also got long COVID. https://www.explorethespaceshow.com/podcasting/monica-verduzco-gutierrez-on-the-long-covid-tidal-wave/
Some people have no issues, but better to be overly cautious than not enough.

@mlawton it happened to me earlier this year and I waited for symptoms to fully disappear then I did walking / light stationary biking and monitored carefully the heart rate and only restarted running when all signals were clear. I think it was just ~10 days off for me in total but it might be less or more for you! It’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, better be safe than sorry :)

@lrz seems a very prudent model to follow. Most of my symptoms are gone, but I’m waiting until the weekend because my sleep is still wrecked and I thought more recovery time could only help.

@mlawton yeah I think that with viruses in general it’s best to be perhaps more prudent than usual… esp when doing high intensity stuff like running. But I’m not a doctor :) Hope you recover super fast!!!

Do not overdo it. Took me four months before my pulse was back to normal

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@Peter_Panther yikes. This seems to be a common experience. I plan to keep it slow and steady.

Peter_Panther,

@mlawton
Do not force yourself over limits. I could not go over 20 km/h (which is not exactly fast) for a long time.

@Peter_Panther @mlawton yeah, it took me a while to break the half marathon world record too! 😁

@hisdeedsaredust @Peter_Panther My American mind mentally glossed right on over that pace! 🙃

about 12-13 mph

@Peter_Panther @hisdeedsaredust ahhh... now that makes sense!

hndrcks,

@mlawton for me, my heart rate was out of control for the first few weeks. It has settled down somewhat but is still a little elevated compared to pre-COVID (about 10 months ago.)

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@hndrcks definitely have heard others share similar experiences with their erratic running HR. almost expecting it, to be honest...

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@mlawton @hndrcks Pay attention to your body. No harm in slowing down or starting from a fast walk and ramping up. Good luck!

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@WTL @hndrcks I am determined to be intentional about it because I know there isn’t a timeframe to work through and that could frustrate me otherwise. I need to keep myself steady.
