squigley,

I can't believe I slept on as long as I did. I guess I was put off by the fact that MacFarlane is the guy. A Star Trek parody rooted in that style of humor did not appeal.

Imagine my surprise to learn that it's not a Star Trek parody. And it's not Family Guy-esque. At all.

It's just... well, it's not Start Trek. But it's like getting to watch a Star Trek unburdened by canon. MacFarlane has crafted a very fine love letter to Roddenberry here.

claudius,

@squigley "unburdened by canon" is a great way to explain it! I know soooooo many trek fans who lose their gagh because some Klingon clearly had different ridges 20 years earlier. This is ridiculous, of course. It's a story. And The Orville sidesteps this entirely, it truly is "unburdened by canon" :-D

squigley,

@claudius
Canon is ever the weight around a franchise's neck. Nowhere is this more self evident than comics with its regular universe resets.

Sometimes writers attempt to sidestep using prequels; always fails! Canon is even more of a minefield when it's the destination.

Alternative universes are another attempt. More successful than prequels, but there's always the temptation to merge/cross continuities. Sounds fun, but adds complexity & reintroduces the problem.
