Here's a good one: Phantom Menace Theatrical versus 4K release.

Does the digital noise reduction hammer the details, especially in faces? Is the new color shift to blue better? You decide

inkican,

@virtualbri A shinier turd is still a turd.

@virtualbri What that movie really needs is a better edit. I went to see it in the the theaters and it was OK, but dragged in the middle (the pod race especially). It's like Lucas divorced his editor between the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy or something... Oh, wait.

@tptigger Yeah for sure that's one thing. Maybe not setting it around a nebulous trade blockade created for...reasons would have helped too.

@virtualbri Yeah. It's completely unclear why Naboo (other than because that's where the emperor was from).
Honestly, I'm of the opinion that Lucas should've hired a writer and handed them an outline. He's an excellent idea man! He's not great at story structure and dialogue.

@tptigger Yeah.

Freudinshade,

@virtualbri that's pretty, um, not good.

@Freudinshade I'm not a fan of Digital Noise Reduction on 35mm. Kills too much unless it's put on shot by shot. So much high frequency detail, like skin, just obliterated.

@virtualbri Interesting. I had thought of the Sith as the red in the left. Maybe it's the most recent version I've seen, but I do prefer it.

@CStamp Yeah, that's the way he is portrayed. Gets into the mess of "where did these sources come from?" Is there a grade on the 35mm film that is because of the projector lamps which could be altering what we see on the computer? A lot of these 4K images come from an HDR version of the film, which then often doesn't show correctly when you make a still and put it on the internet.

So I take these with a mountain of salt, but stick to some of the overall look changes to consider.

@CStamp But if the 35mm version was transferred to DVD just looking like that, yikes.
