Here's a warm fuzzy for your Friday ... NOT!

This blog post from NASA and also from Boeing mentions "emerging issues" for the NASA/Boeing Starliner CFT. That's not a good sign at this point in the process.

https://blogs.nasa.gov/commercialcrew/2023/05/26/nasa-boeing-provide-update-on-starliner-flight-test-readiness/

https://starlinerupdates.com/nasa-boeing-provide-update-on-starliner-flight-test-readiness/

olavf,

@kenthebin I heard about potential additional parachute testing, and the outside chance of "battery swelling", but industry standard tape? I don't even

kenthebin,
@kenthebin@spacey.space avatar

@olavf I don't know. I'm a software guy, not a hardware guy. (Now retired, and I never worked in aerospace anyway.)

olavf,

@kenthebin I'm just an enthusiast as well, just what came out today sounds a bit more serious than what I read yesterday, which was far more optimistic

kenthebin,
@kenthebin@spacey.space avatar

@olavf Yeah, that's why they waited until late Friday afternoon (Eastern Time) before a holiday weekend to release it.

When I submitted it for the Ars Technica Rocket Report, I included this comment to Eric:

""For some reason "emerging issues" at this point in the process doesn't give me a warm secure feeling. :(

Never mind completing the contract before the ISS deorbits; I'm beginning to wonder if they'll complete the CFT before the ISS deorbits."

olavf,

@kenthebin same. If they're supposed to start fueling in a couple weeks, they should be doing final closeouts, not further investigation.
And NASA is confident enough they've bought enough Dragon options to cover their needs.
So I already have questions about the BO/Boeing/et al fixed priced lander contract

kenthebin,
@kenthebin@spacey.space avatar

@olavf I think Boeing is beyond hope for anything.

BO needs to dump Old Space CEO Bob Smith and get someone who can execute.

I don't really know much about the others on the so-called National Team, though I suspect that LM is probably not much better than Boeing.

But it's not like NASA had any better choice available for a second lunar lander provider.

kenthebin,
@kenthebin@spacey.space avatar

The NASA/Boeing Starliner CFT, which was NET July 21, is now TBD.

This post from Boeing mentions just an issue with parachutes, but there also issues with possible battery sidewall ruptures and tape with a somewhat flammable adhesive.

https://starlinerupdates.com/boeing-statement-on-starliner-cft-status/

olavf,

@kenthebin my understanding is it's an industry standard tape but they're using it in places where it wasn't intended

And to add to the mix, Eric's article several paragraphs down casually mentions another sticky valve problem. I had assumed that was sorted out a year ago

kenthebin,
@kenthebin@spacey.space avatar

@olavf It's still the old valves at this point. But if they're properly applying the mitigations that they developed, one does wonder why there was a problem.

And if they're not properly applying the mitigations ... WTF!?

kenthebin,
@kenthebin@spacey.space avatar

@olavf Follow-up on the valve issue.

A person identifying in his bio as "Chief of NASA Flight Operations Safety Office" tweeted to Eric:

"Re: valve failure, it was not a propulsion valve, but a valve in the cooling system."

olavf,

@kenthebin I don't know if that's better or worse. It's like they're playing a game of whack-a-mole at this point

With SpX-30 Cargo Dragon having vacated the Harmony module zenith port and returned to Earth, this morning the Crew-8 Crew Dragon relocated from the Harmony module forward port to the zenith port. This frees up the forward port for the CFT Starliner.
