ai6yr,

AP: NASA confirms mystery object that crashed through roof of Florida home came from space station https://apnews.com/article/space-station-debris-florida-home-8c5cd89b0d9db0f5c274ab9ed1f0713c

ai6yr,

NASA: "Based on the examination, the agency determined the debris to be a stanchion from the NASA flight support equipment used to mount the batteries on the cargo pallet. The object is made of the metal alloy Inconel, weighs 1.6 pounds, is 4 inches in height and 1.6 inches in diameter." https://blogs.nasa.gov/spacestation/2024/04/15/nasa-completes-analysis-of-recovered-space-object/

homelessjun,

@ai6yr well, that's inconel for you...

ai6yr,

@homelessjun Hmm, apparently a big enough piece will get you back to earth! Never heard of it before, but I see it's exceedingly good at surviving heat!!! (oops, guess that shouldn't be thrown out the back window of the ISS).

homelessjun,

@ai6yr inconel parts are used in thermal reactors to hold very hot parts together and for internal shielding. give them a coat or two of oxide and they turn a beautiful bronze colour.

ai6yr,

@homelessjun LOL I suspect someone at NASA is writing a memo about "do not try to dispose of inconel parts via the atmosphere"

homelessjun,

@ai6yr yeah, they probably never expected them to come back home. 😅

ai6yr,

@homelessjun I mean, only 200 miles away from Kennedy Space Center, that is pretty darn close in space terms.

ai6yr,

I've sent you a souvenir from space
It's coming straight down to your place

I dropped it off high
Please don't ask me why

Just remember your roof you must replace

ai6yr,

@paninid LOL I think I'm human, at least! 🤪

@ai6yr
(with apologies to Harry Warren)
That thing in the sky
that we sent way up high
needs a mention

Be aware that you might
get a big fright at night
from the stantion

It might make a mess
of your roof nonetheless
take a photo

That piece of alloy
is not just a toy
that’s inconel

@ai6yr Kind of amazed that it landed back in Florida. I wonder how many of those rather substantial parts landed somewhere else in the world and harmlessly buried themselves in the ground on impact never to be discovered or if so, recognized for what they are? 🤔

@SteveInVentura @ai6yr IIRC 6 out of 8 will hit water.

@shonin @ai6yr Yeah, that thought had occurred to me. I had wondered if a marine archeologist might think they found Atlantis or something, someday. But the chances of anyone noticing one coming down anywhere must be very small.

ai6yr,

@SteveInVentura @shonin "WE FOUND ALIEN SPACESHIPS UNDER THE OCEAN!"

@ai6yr So is NASA going to pay for the roof repairs?
