So let me get this straight… collects massive amounts of data, the platform is full of brands and celebrities, AND it uses an algorithm-driven feed. It tracks users, serves ads, and has quickly filled up, according to reports, with trolls, Nazis and the far right. Oh, and the site makes a shadow account for everyone with an Instagram profile, whether they want to participate or not. But still new users are flocking to the platform?? It’s a case of FOMO, and I don’t think it will last. F*ck Zuck and the corporate trojan horse he rode in on. Very disappointed in those I know who have bought the BS. That’s all I have to say on the matter.

@CharlieMcHenry hey! sounds exactly like the people who i want reading my feeds…..not! happy we (my instance) are blocking that site from the start.

@CharlieMcHenry @ppatel It's just big because Meta is marketing it. When Meta loses interest, I bet lots of users will too.

rooktallon,

@CharlieMcHenry Yeah, that definitely sounds terrible.

@CharlieMcHenry Moreover, I just find all the posts on threads to be relentlessly inane. Like the thirty second instagram reels. They're a special kind of boring.

@CharlieMcHenry What was your experience on Threads?

@CharlieMcHenry Easy to get huge numbers of new users shortly after launching when you sign them up yourself.
What I don't understand is people using the excuse they're looking for something better than FB or Instagram - why would you go to the same developer that makes the product you're not happy with? People don't do this when buying cars, or other products. 🤦‍♂️

@CharlieMcHenry wait what, shadow profile?

@CharlieMcHenry

Much of that, I believe, is incorrect. There are no ads, though obviously that won't last forever. I have personally not seen any trolls, nazis or haters in general. (There has been at least one case of a large hate account, LibsOfTikTok, having threads taken down.) This story of shadow profiles is, I think, merely rumor, perhaps to explain the high signup numbers.

I've got family & friends on Instagram. Meta is pernicious, but if they do federate, that may not matter.

@richardgrant I was premature in suggesting the site serves ads now, but as you grant, that will surely follow. I have testimony via my feed from an Insta user who discovered he had a profile on Threads that was already being suggested as a follow (makes sense, why not move if you’ve already got followers?). He found out from his girlfriend who signed up and was presented with his profile as a suggested friend. As for the nazis, haters and trolls, I got that from the article below. But for me personally, the fact the platform is not only corporate, but Meta owned, is reason enough to avoid it. I acknowledge there are other points-of-view. https://www.mediamatters.org/facebook/far-right-figures-including-nazi-supporters-anti-gay-extremists-and-white-supremacists-are

fumnanya,

@CharlieMcHenry @richardgrant the haters and trolls are definitely a problem…i wonder how meta’s gonna deal with all of that

but their whole story is more like since your insta and threads are linked (for now, that may change but i honestly don’t think it will), it allows you to “pre-follow” people you follow on insta, so when (if?) they make a threads account they then get the “oh hey some of your insta friends are already here and think you’re important…

@CharlieMcHenry I'm sure a good number of initial accounts are curious users who are jumping in to see what the big deal is, and then never logging in again. Aside from the number of registrations, a much more interesting metric for me is daily/monthly/weekly average users. Eventually you'll start observing a downwards trend. It doesn't sound like a good experience at all.
