@Catelli I remember when they had discounts on Apple gift cards one time. I bought a couple and couldn't activate the cards - they had already been used. Fortunately they swapped out the cards with ones that did work, but never trusted them after that.

It’ll be interesting to see more details on the decision that the challenge against Saskatchewan anti-trans policies can go ahead.

I suspect that the judge sees a violation of common law rights that existed prior to the Charter.

Because that’s how section 33 actually works: it doesn’t cancel out all rights, it simply forces legislation to be interpreted in a pre-Charter context with respect to sections 2, and 7-15, of the Charter.

dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@taco I'm not a lawyer but wouldn't legislation override common law, at least if specifically crafted for the purpose?

hewer_of_code, to random
@hewer_of_code@mstdn.ca avatar

I think road tolls are a reasonable way to fund the construction and maintenance of roads, if not to pay for them outright, then at least as a cost-offset.

dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@hewer_of_code Agreed completely but the idea that "this" highway is free and "that" highway is not is a problem. The idea that “that" highway is for profit by a private company is a worse problem.

We really need a standardized approach to road pricing that includes municipal roads, but that doesn't seem to be possible right now.

dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@hewer_of_code Example of the first problem - Hwy 412 in Durham near where I live. It was built with tolls and Ford removed the tolls last year. That was widely criticized - but the 412 was barely used because there was an 80 km/h limited stop road running in parallel less than 1 km away. Why pay a toll when the other road would get you home maybe 1-2 minutes later for free.

So in a perfect world, both would have road pricing, but without a comprehensive plan, tolling 412 was not sustainable.

dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@hewer_of_code That statement applies to SO many things…

There is an.. older co-worker, a woman at work, who decided to put "any pronouns" on her Teams profile.

The kind of person you just "know" is not an "any pronoun" kinda person.

So my work bestie wrote to our manager a month ago, asking her if she could talk to her, and explain how it's not okay to put the wrong pronouns like that. (She can easily put no pronouns at all.)

Well our manager "talked" to her and she either refused to listen, or refused to understand, and decided to keep what she had.

I understand needing an explanation. I don't understand refusing to listen, and doing that when you know you're hurting some of your co-workers.

This team is so toxic.

dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@stephanie @anna_propriate and so unnecessary. That field is for her to say what she wants to be called. I think we can assume she has strong opinions on that.

dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@stephanie @reflex That's ultimately it. Society changes can be generational ones and this is one we're still squarely in the middle of.

Too bad that simply respecting the wishes of others is so hard for so many.

dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@stephanie @reflex She surely is ignorant and at this point intentionally resisting. Some people make it to later life and maintain flexibility but many don't. There's nothing to do done for it but to let them die out in time.

That said, the manager should absolutely insist that the pronouns field in Team either be accurate or empty, with consequences.

New record holder for smallest iOS app update size: small Toronto restaurant chain Impact Kitchen, at 309 kilobytes.

Largest update size currently on my list: Gmail, at 501,248 kilobytes.

I usually only update the smallest apps, as my nearly-undetectable feedback to their developers.

@c_9 The low end can be misleading, though. The recent Libby library app update was 2.7mb. I’m pretty sure it’s just a web wrapper.

Why are Ontario property taxes based on 2016 appraisals? How much have property values gone up since then? How can this ever be corrected

dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@adamed @monicarooney Why? Doug Ford. How? At some point, a mass reappraisal effort.

dharrison, (edited )
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@adamed @monicarooney I can explain ( I’ve actually been in the tech side of this for decades).

The city sets its budget - the total amount they spend. They take the current value of property assessments, and divide the one into the other to get the tax rate - the amount you pay per $1000 of assessed value. If your house is worth more, you pay more.

The actual announcements of 9.5% increase apply to that rate…

dharrison, (edited )
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@adamed @monicarooney What if assessments change? The impact depends in how your property did against the total. If your assessment decreased more than the average assessment, your property tax can actually go down - assuming no increase in the tax rate.

The problem with not updating assessments is that people in new houses are paying a higher share of the total than they should, because older houses are at those 2026 values…

dharrison, (edited )
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@adamed @monicarooney Eventually when enough people realize this, there will be anger. The Ontario Liberals should make this a campaign issue since Ford decided not to do reassessments.

Meaningless performing to the base - not a shock from Doug Ford at all. So long as the federal carbon pricing backstop remains in place, it doesn't matter whether there is a provincial carbon price. And if a future Ontario government wanted to introduce an Ontario carbon price, all they would have to do is to remove the referendum requirement before introducing the carbon pricing bill.

Anything to distract from his looting of the province. https://mastodon.social/@ap236/111925275100122507

This one is for you, @hotdogsladies.

FAQ:

  1. This is a proof-of-concept; no promises
  2. I don't know when it'll ship, if I can even get it production-ready
  3. Data coverage (Wikidata) is okay but not stellar; not all actors will have their heights shown
  4. I'll try to use sensible units for countries that aren't idiots like us
dharrison,
@dharrison@mstdn.ca avatar

@jsnell @caseyliss Here in the English parts of Canada, we mostly do height in feet/inches. I think when metric is used, it's a bit of both of those.

It’s worth noting that 1.78m is the SI measurement so if nothing else I'd guess it would be preferred in France and maybe(?) Quebec.
