I much prefer this flag for Maine compared to the current one, which is just the state's coat of arms on a blue field. It's much more unique compared to other flags and does a great job symbolizing Maine's nickname: the Pine Tree State.
Just recently, I got ownership of this magazine since the previous one has been inactive for a while. The first thing I'm experimenting with is changing the icon for this magazine with a new flag! The magenta is from Kbin's logo, and the slash evokes both the shape of the logo and the slashes in "/m/" (or "/c/" if you're on Lemmy).
EDIT: If you have any ideas for an icon or would prefer to just leave it as is, please share!
We'll see what they decide on. To be clear, the thumbnail of this thread isn't what they've decided on, just a potential design they might use. They're also looking at a bunch of others, though I don't like most of them very much.
This is one of my designs that I'm really happy with, probably just because I feel the colors go together really well while being arranged in a very distinct manner. I don't remember what I had in mind symbolism-wise when I made this flag, but here are my guesses:
The pine is a prominent symbol of New England.
The triangular arrangement of the colors represents New Hampshire's nickname, the White Mountain State. You can even view the white and yellow triangles as a white, shaded mountain.
The white & red allude to England's flag (more New England symbolism).
The blue & yellow were probably taken from the original flag using symbolism from the seal, with the blue evoking the water from the harbor and the yellow representing granite (New England also being called the Granite State).
Interesting. I personally like simpler designs on flags. While complexity can work and there are a lot of instances where I like it, I really don't like the flags you mentioned since they just slap a seal or coat of arms on a blue background and call it a day. They're not at all distinctive, and they honestly aren't very interesting. They're just a bunch of clutter you can't make out from a distance surrounded by a field of blue.
I'd argue that these designs have more flair than the current one — the sun symbol is much more prominent, and the field is separated into different colors — but that's mainly a preference thing.
These are redesign ideas I made (alongside a bunch of others that I've been posting), not anything the state is considering.
I agree with you somewhat. A flag should be easily distinguishable from a distance or else why not just make a tapestry/banner/etc. I’ve seen the argument that flags should be simple so that they can be made and flown by anyone, which makes sense to me.
IMO the American flag is too busy. It takes too long to make an exact amount of stars and stripes w/o manufacturing. Tricolors or Quadcolors are probably the most efficient. Despite this, I do like the Bhutanese flag and the flag of the Seychelles so there’s some room for debate there.
I don't mind the American flag much. It's definitely not one of my favorites, but I like the nod to the 13 original states and 50 current states. The stars make things a bit cluttered but not cluttered enough for me to dislike the flag. Totally not biased as an American.
I don't think they're all that bad—F29 and F1953 are pretty decent—though there were definitely way better options. The North Star Flag is an obvious example.
