I have one double LP where the sides are 1+4 and 2+3. I could have made sense of it if it were 1+3 and 2+4, as that would allow you to play it continuous if you have two turntables, but please help me make sense of 1+4 and 2+3? @vinylrecords

kompaktkiste,

@slevelt @vinylrecords
back in the day there were record players where you could put more vinyl slabs on a spindle for "continuous play", so you could play side 1+2 in a combo and 3+4 later.

@kompaktkiste @vinylrecords AMAZING - thank you. This set-up makes sense, as indeed it only leaves the break between 2+3. (could have done that with 1+3 and 2+4 also, but apparently they hadn’t considered people buying a second table and a mixer 😂)

@slevelt @kompaktkiste @vinylrecords In the 1970s in the US, there was a game show called "The Liar's Club" where celebrity panelists would be handed an item and they'd explain to the contestants what the old item was. The contestant had to guess which was lying. Many of the items were things that the contestants were simply too young to recognize.

I have now reached the age where I see things I'm familiar with be weird to younger folk. It's pretty funny.

@glightly @kompaktkiste @vinylrecords ha! I like you calling me a youngster but I am afraid this is my amnesia playing up after having moved away from vinyl when I moved away from my country of birth in my very early 20s, and only returning (to vinyl, not to country) decades later 😅

As an old guy who grew up with records (oh, sorry, "vinyl") it's odd to see people who got into them after their heyday and never met a record changer.

BTW, records set up this way are called "changer sequenced." They're kind of annoying now, because you have to go through more bother to play things in sequence (I don't), but occasionally they improve an album (Rolling Stones More Hot Rocks) is better as one early-60s and one mid-60s double album.

@cherold @slevelt @kompaktkiste @vinylrecords We had one back in the day (everyone did) and those things just destroy records. Just looking at that picture gives me anxiety.

@cherold @kompaktkiste @vinylrecords I’m also wondering if there’s a regional divide here? - so far, everyone talking about them in my replies seems to be US-based, as far as I can tell. I used to work in a record store fresh out of school, so I got more exposure to vinyl and record collectors than most in the years post-introduction of the CD, and in the Netherlands I have never seen one of these.

@kompaktkiste @slevelt @vinylrecords My copy of Beach Boys - Endless Summer is like this and I thought it was an error until I looked it up to see if it was valuable and discovered these existed.

LMHarnisch,

@kompaktkiste @slevelt @vinylrecords pretty sure those are 78s, which lasted 5 minutes per side. And you only stacked records like that if you didn't care whether they got scratched. Audiophiles didn't stack records. I know. I was there.

@kompaktkiste @slevelt @vinylrecords Oh, I remember those things. Weren't they rather famous for damaging records?

the album in question, ; sides 1+4 on one record, sides 2+3 on the other 🤷🏻‍♂️ @vinylrecords

@slevelt @vinylrecords is it an older album perhaps? Because that's how they used to be pressed
