Giving a shot on my old Pixel 4. Hoping to see how much of my life I can replicate on FOSS software. There will be work-related stuff that won't move over, but so far, I've got the basics covered.

@gabek I've got my password manager, I've got my 2FA passwords, I've got the Fennec browser, I've got Fedi, I've got Fetlife, I've got email, I've got filtering of spam calls, I've got my podcasts. Not too shabby for a first night. It's a little annoying to know that phone will not be able to access my Discord communities. I'd rather keep it clean of telemetry and personal data tracking, so that'll be a tough call to make.

roadriverrail,
@roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

@gabek Yeah, ultimately, I'll likely butt up against, say, wanting to watch Youtube on it. There might be some app that gets around some of the more irritating parts of that. And my roller derby league uses Slack, so that'll also be a sticking point. But those are problems for future me.

Did you see, thanks to @mxks, that there's a new way to browse the Owncast directory, and watch those live streams on Roku devices? It replaces the old, previously removed application. https://channelstore.roku.com/es-us/details/2179326b6b85869a1a3a18d48ca76de6/owncasts

You can learn more about it in this month's Owncast community newsletter. I always love reading it, and learning something new.

TRANS FEM FRIENDS: What do you wish you could say to the person you were before transition who thought it was impossible to ever actually be a girl or be fem?

I sometimes think back and find myself at a loss at what would have supported that girl best. She was so sad, hopeless, and often dissociated or in fight/flight/freeze/fawn over her distress with how she felt like she couldn't fit in the world. And like, I know "it gets better" or "it really is possible" wouldn't have gotten through.

I talk to a lot of young trans folks who go through this still every day, and so would appreciate others thoughts on this!

@JoscelynTransient You know, the thing about me is that I'd put most of the pieces together on my own and, at that age (about 23), I was pretty fearless. My partner helped me see why I should be out as bisexual, and I was freshly out and proud. I'd already been someone's maid of honor because I was "the closest thing to a woman friend" that person had. The only thing that held me back was that, when I tried to come out as "androgynous", it wasn't a thing and I couldn't get any understanding.

roadriverrail,
@roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

@JoscelynTransient Not really a thread, but kinda felt I hadn't said it all on re-reading. I guess what I'd go tell myself if I could is just "Don't worry, you really do know what's up and it'll take time for others to as well, but you'll get your shot. Oh, and by the way, here are books that already exist in your time that'll give solid theory to your truth. Your partner would probably even understand you better if you shared this book with them."

My heart goes out to xz. A single maintainer, who was clearly in a rough place with mental health, screaming out to the world for some help and additional contributions, and somebody shows up wanting to help. Could you imagine how happy that maintainer was? They were no longer alone.

And it turns out the only reason somebody wanted to help them was nefarious. I can’t imagine how they feel right now as everyone is blaming them. I hope they’re ok.

roadriverrail,
@roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

@gabek I didn't know about this. Is there somewhere I can get some context?

    @flockofnazguls I do absolutely agree. I use a lot of Bluetooth headsets, largely because, at one point, I was designing a phone system and got a lot of vendor samples. Some of them have lasted like...nearly 10 years at this point. Some survived multiple trips through the wash and even have been broken and glued back together. Most were awful failures, and I'd actually be happy to get wired headphones for running (my most common use case), if only my phone had the jack.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @flockofnazguls In my use cases, if I'm wanting higher quality audio, I'm already in a fairly stationary situation, so I'm using my workstation or a laptop anyway, and both have 3.5mm support already.

    For running and stuff like that, those headphones take a pounding, and whichever pair becomes my go-to running pair is just gonna die. The "wireless earbuds", with no cable linking them, are the worst offenders by far.

    It's always bothered me that when people adapt Kafka's Metamorphosis they depict Gregor Samsa as a roach. Cockroaches do not undergo metamorphosis. They are born as nymphs which are just smaller wingless versions of the adult form.

    Kafka writes that Gregor can only enjoy rotten food. Which also makes him not at all roach-like. Roaches strongly prefer fresh vegetables to rotten ones.

    I always imagined him as a beetle. Which implies that the man Gregor was a larvae for all his pre-bug life.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @futurebird Someone once told me "It's not Kafkaesque to wake up an insect. If you wake up an insect and your first thought is that this might make you late for work...that is Kafkaesque." That completely changed my perspective on a lot of things.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @sinvega @futurebird Wow, I haven't seen this and it's great. I absolutely love comedy that juxtaposes the banal with the existential like that.

    It's also why this commercial from Welcome To Nightvale lives in my head...not rent free, but certainly as a shabby deadbeat roommate.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @Illuminatus @player_03 @sinvega @futurebird I've heard a hypothesis that laughter started as a way to signal "What I thought was a danger was in fact not." So, for example...unk bunk the early human hears a rustling in the bushes and goes into alert thinking it's a predator, but then only a tiny bird comes out of the bushes...hahahha! That's hilarious! I thought we'd die but it was harmless!

    From that point of view, transforming dread into humor is a way to save us from our own thoughts.

    Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

    I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

    What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @RickiTarr First off, the way you end the post does have a certain comedy to it in light of the subject matter.

    Can't say my boomer mom communicates that way, but my partner and I are Gen X about a decade apart and I do see her do this a bit. Mostly in terms of less important courses of action, like going to dinner. I've had to learn that "So, what would you like to do about dinner?" actually means "I'd like to have dinner pretty soon."

    Watching the same show over-and-over again is one way I regulate the autistic side of my brain. But the ADHD side sure gets bored sometimes.

    Do you watch any shows on repeat?

    @actuallyautistic

    image: @NoNonsenseND

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @pilum @autism101 @actuallyautistic I could basically just watch DS9 straight through, then turn around and do it again, and again and again and again, for the rest of my life, and I would consider that TV time well-spent.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @autism101 @actuallyautistic Guilty as charged. I've always had a small fistful of movies I rewatched again and again. I do it with TV shows, too, obviously. DS9 is probably my biggest one. Also, despite being an MST3K fan, I'll basically just rewatch the same 10 episodes again and again. I've seen "Mitchell" probably 10x more than any other MST3K episode.

    As for my ADHD tendencies? Welllll...I typically do some other activity while the overly-familiar media plays.

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @wilbr @pilum @autism101 @actuallyautistic Indeed to all of this. Garak and Quark's scene about root beer is just such a perfect conversation about their experiences being stuck between larger empires, and only DS9 ever wanted to speak up for the realpolitik needed for the Federation to claim its vaunted set of values. If only Ron Moore could learn how to end a show properly.

    Just how big is Tallahassee? ... It seems all the good crime happens there ... Is there lead in the water or something

    Hugz & xXx

    roadriverrail,
    @roadriverrail@signs.codes avatar

    @melissabeartrix @Tooden Florida was colonized from the north to the south, and there was originally an "old Florida" in the eastern side of the panhandle and a "new Florida" on the western side. Tallahassee was located to be more accessible to both halves. Miami really didn't start to take off until the early-mid 20th century. Miami was a capital of the cocaine trade, which meant a lot of crime. Cocaine is still wildly common down there, too. I know from experience.

    When did they introduce referee video reviews into Rugby? Also I’ll never accept lifting at the lineout. That was a penalty when I played wing forward! Also also, when was the last time a scrum half put a ball into the scrum straight and not directly into their second row?

    I just learned that the original Doom Editor tooling was built in Objective-c. It makes a ton of sense, but it's cool to actually hear it. The same people who talks shit about Objective-c loves the people who made Doom. And the people who made Doom say they loved objc and project builder.

    roadriverrail,

    @gabek I thought ObjC was fine enough when I worked in it. Occasionally clever and occasionally annoying, like most other languages. I vastly preferred it to C++.
