Trying out GodoRogue tonight. It's great! You can use the keyboard commands or mouse directly to different locations, how you can see in the screenshot - the yellow line. And you can play this one in-browser. It was made in HTML5!
@jake4480 So happy you found GodoRogue interesting to play! Im the dav who made it and found your account when I was doing some research. Did you managed to beat it?
@AikonCWD oh wow- hi!! It is AMAZING and I think like I inspired several other people to try it too haha - and no, I didn't beat it yet - I've never beaten a true roguelike? Maybe someday? But I LOVE it.
@jake4480 in the Epyx version of Rogue, they featured a very interesting form of copy protection. You could copy the disk and the program would appear to run just fine, but the copied version would be bugged so that your character would always have low skill points and single digit hit points.
You'd inevitably die right away and your tombstone would read "PIRATE SCUM".
@jake4480 the way I found out was hilarious. We were having an early days LAN party with Atari ST computers. Both I and my friend Dave owned a copy of Rogue. Dave was complaining that the game was impossible to play. He had told us that on a number of occasions and we were all just like, "Dave, you're doing it wrong."
So now we're all hanging out together and Dave loads up Rogue to show us what he means. Sure enough, anyone who plays on Dave's computer dies in like 5 moves every single time. It took us a few trips through the game to put 1 and 1 together and realize it was a very clever form of copy protection.
The weird thing is that Dave actually owned a real copy of the game (or at least it appeared to be real). Either something got messed up in shipping or Dave picked up a counterfeit copy from some shady fence.
Funniest thing is that Dave's nickname was Charlie Brown because he had the most shit luck of anyone we knew. If it could go wrong, it would go wrong on him.
