United Nations Concerned At Vulnerability Of Migrants Crossing Darien Gap

That's a huge increase of people, made more poignant by the fact that the Darién Gap is one of the most dangerous crossings in the world - no roads for 66 miles through some of the densest jungle and swampland in South America. I'm wondering if the recent economic insecurity in Venezuela and Argentina is responsible for the increases.

@Arotrios I think those things must contribute a lot (alongside Haiti), but it's also a general litmus of world conditions - that route has increased massively each year since 2021. Here's some reportage from that time which states that 100,000 people is a huge jump from previous years.

I just found a better write-up from the UN and you are right: a lot of this is Venezuela.

Last month, the UN quoted figures from Panamanian authorities showing that those crossing the jungle came mainly from Venezuela (55 per cent), Haiti (14 per cent), and Ecuador (14 per cent).

Some are coming from Colombia and Peru and children of Haitian parents born in Chile and Brazil have been recorded too.

Others come from as far away as China, Afghanistan and Nepal.
