YSK that it is not a proper way to wash your fruits and veggies with soap

Why YSK this is that some of the soap absorbs into the fruit, especially berries, and let's say you are washing your cherries with dish soap, and you eat them. That story ends with a long bathroom trip as soap makes you a little queasy. ETA: Nobody has heard about this?! I see it in the southeast where I live.

The best way to clean them is to roll them in baking soda then let them soak in a bowl of vinegar.

MoxFcCloud,

Went to a party once and got volunteered to help geill. Host asked his brother to wash the chicken and the guy proceeds to wash it with dish soap. I did not eat chicken that night.

katalaree,

I think this is most commonly seen in Vietnam

Merthin1234,

So far it seems I’m the only one here who uses a fruit spray to wash their fruit under water. After reading this though I think I want to check the ingredients lol.

I always wash my raspberries with a good, strong soap and a stout wire brush.

Festy,

I put mine through the dishwasher.

there are people who wash rice using soap as well 🤷🏽‍♂️

Who in the world does that? I've never hard of anyone washing veggies/fruits with soap!

BrianTheeBiscuiteer,

OP said they're in the Southeast. Fuckin' Florida.

eddythompson,

People who don’t buy their produce from supermarkets that already wash the produce for them. It’s pretty common in non-western countries.

Not here - Eastern Europe, its not. Never heard of it. I and pretty much most of the people that I know, buy our products from the farmers market, there's nothing pre-washed there, you can tell by the dirt/dust a lot of them still have.
And not in my bf's country either (Philippines). We both wash our veggies with good ol' tap/fountain water.

@mycus That is simply wild to me. This however seems like a covid measure, something similar we did as well (hydrogen peroxide + water combo), but it was only limited to the covid era, haven't done it since.
Was washing with that bleach+water mixture common in Brazil before covid too?

Anarch157a,

Was washing with that bleach+water mixture common in Brazil before covid too?

Yes. Our government started recommending it since late '90s. The advice is to use 1 tablespoon of bleach for every 1l of water and let the veggies/fruits soaking for 30 to 60 minutes.

@grus Yeah, my parents did it as long as I can remember.

My wife asked around (she was weirded out by it too) after we moved states and people do it across the country too, it is pretty common here. I'm living in the south now.

Not gonna lie, I think I'll do a bit of research on the topic. This whole thread was sort of a reality check for me haha.

Yup, here in Brazil it is practically common place.

Even the government encourages it.

With bleach.

edit: I do it too, you just mix 1 bottle cap of pure bleach with 1 liter of water and let the produce sit for ~ 15min, then rinse the shit out of that mf with just water.

cloaker,

heard about this yesterday. wtf?

I know right?!? Dish soap by itself isn’t going to get all of the outdoors off of your fruits and veggies, need to add some bleach to really get your produce sparkling! /s

syndicate,

I grew up in the southeast and never saw soap used.

FallGuy217,

Yeeeaaah, born and raised in GA. Never heard of this in my life.

Might as well just use ethanol, kill the germs and catch a buzz.

taurentipper,

Probably would be safest to just let them have a bath in some and just drink it down

yankeebobo,

Really? People do that?!

Darren,

Well this is a first. I have never heard anyone do this! Usually I’ll just do something like rinse off things like apples/oranges. If it’s something that is more easily bruised like berries, I’ll throw them in some water with some salt in there.
