Do You Think There Would Have Been a Large Protest if Steve Huffman Just Said We're Charging to Use the API to Increase Revenue?

I've been a long time Redditor and an Apollo user for about a year. I even paid for it. The main draw for me was the lack of advertising. In the back of my head I kept thinking that it couldn't last. Reddit is losing revenue from the lack of advertising views. It didn't...

Reddit needing to make $ to maintain the resources is understandable.

There were other ways to generate revenue without being greedy.
For example, users pay for awards like gold etc on Reddit. This concept could have expanded to a marketplace for 3PA stickers. If 3PA apps have stickers that they were pushing as additional revenue for the developers, Reddit could have stepped in and developed a marketplace to host and promote them for the developers as well. It would be a similar model to the Google Play and Apple App stores taking a commission for in app purchases. It doesn't have to be in the vicinity of 30% either. It's not a perfect example by any means, so don't flame me or the idea.

I deleted all of my accounts, posts and comments after the clusterfuck of an AMA. The interviews Huffman gave the following week to The Verge and other media sites totally reinforced my decision not to go back. I still go back to get some tech resources that I need but it's through alternative addresses so I don't add to their analytics stats.

Stickers or gimmicky items like that seem to be popular enough for Selig to spin it off as a separate business.
My comment was about Reddit’s inability to think of a smarter long term solution with the 3PA developers. Instead they went with a moonshot for a short term gain that reeks of arrogance, greed and stupidity.

He's had a bit too much of the attitude of, "I'm the founder. All must bow to me".

I've had to deal with a lot of that at work before :)

Based on that logic, how do the powers to be at Reddit feel about American Presidential elections?

Whoever is on the team working out all these strategies are just copying rules straight out of an authoritarian Government’s little red playbook.
“You are not allowed to protest!”
“You are only allowed to protest using Government approved methods”

You need sprinklers on the track.
Better yet, fans get to vote for when the sprinklers get turned on and off during the race via f1.com/sprinklertime

This is the heart of Reddit - total coordination of random users uniting for a common cause and message.

What’s the back story for using John Oliver? What did I miss🤔

Humans aren’t ready for life in general.

This guy is setting himself up to fund the IPO from authoritarian state sponsored VCs. They're going to be most impressed by his hardline stance

Love the message to check back in a few days 😂

I’ll just keep hitting refresh for the next couple of days then 😂

The full interview published at The Verge gave a pretty good insight into Huffman’s inability to manage the situation. Comparing the way he talks about third parties and his “recollection” regarding Apollo to what the Apollo creator wrote, it’s completely worlds apart. It feels as if Huffman is in smash mode and piling on the lies.

Programming tutorials are the best

“Just copy the code from this other tutorial who grabbed it from GitHub and paste it in then run. But I have no idea what it does lolz”

Or
“Hit me up on Patreon and I’ll give you access to the code snippet that I copied from someone else and claim full credit for it”

fupuyifi,

Agreed
I'm not sure why people are complaining about not having access to resources when most of it was linked to other sites like Gitlab, HuggingFace, etc. I've probably only found 2 posts that were useful over the past couple of months.

I've deleted my accounts and I can't be bothered creating another account just to vote.

Let's hope the quality content disappears and the IPO tanks.

Nice one, but check out the # of fingers on the left hand. Then again, future humans might have augmented themselves to have extra digits :)

NVIDIA is going to be faster and easier to be compatible with SD.
VRAM is going to be your friend especially if you start working with Deforum and video

Why not?

I'm currently running an NVIDIA GPU on Debian with SD and I haven't had any issues.

YSK that it is not a proper way to wash your fruits and veggies with soap

Why YSK this is that some of the soap absorbs into the fruit, especially berries, and let's say you are washing your cherries with dish soap, and you eat them. That story ends with a long bathroom trip as soap makes you a little queasy. ETA: Nobody has heard about this?! I see it in the southeast where I live.

fupuyifi,
fupuyifi avatar

there are people who wash rice using soap as well 🤷🏽‍♂️

r/australia is weak. They didn't go dark

fupuyifi,

That's really the only way to have an effective protest.
Lose all of the brainless entertainment and porn subreddits.

I think they'll dominate until 2026 unless there's a Technical Directive from the FIA banning Adrian Newey from the team...

Difference between kbin and lemmy

Lately I often read about kbin.social being similar to lemmy but more accessible. So I created an account there to check it out. My experience so far is a little mixed. From kbin I can access all Lemmy posts, although I find the interface less intuitive to join new communities. So from the kbin side it feels like an other Lemmy...

Well the most important difference for me is that I didn’t experience issues with my login on kbin.
I still can’t login on Lemmy with a separate account I setup on that platform.
