On my way back home tonight, a car was parked in the cycle lane. I rang my bell as I passed it and saw a lady on her phone sitting in the driver seat.
I said "This is a bike lane, you can't park here"
She ignored me.
I stopped in front of her car and took my phone out, snapped a picture of her car.
She immediately drove away.
I did too.
3 minutes later she appeared next to me, slowed down to my speed and yelled "why did you take my photo?"
-I took a photo of your car because it was blocking the bike lane.
-I was taking a phone call, I had to stop.
-You can't park in the bike lane.
-I'm going to do the same to you.-she says as she starts filming me (while driving my speed, approx 23k/h)
-Ok
-How do you like being recorded?
-It's fine, I'm not doing anything wrong. You shouldn't use your phone while driving tho.
-I'll post you online.
-ok
Regular reminder that if I ever was to die on my bike because we lack safe infrastructure, my only request is that everyone politicises the F out of it.
I want to be embalmed on that bicycle and set in the middle of Auckland Transport's boardroom so those car-brained C-Suiters need to stare at my mangled corpse every time they meet.
Make sure I am the last ever cyclist death by a negligent transport agency in this city. That's all I ask.
