Bike commute story:

On my way back home tonight, a car was parked in the cycle lane. I rang my bell as I passed it and saw a lady on her phone sitting in the driver seat.
I said "This is a bike lane, you can't park here"
She ignored me.
I stopped in front of her car and took my phone out, snapped a picture of her car.
She immediately drove away.
I did too.
3 minutes later she appeared next to me, slowed down to my speed and yelled "why did you take my photo?"

-I took a photo of your car because it was blocking the bike lane.
-I was taking a phone call, I had to stop.
-You can't park in the bike lane.
-I'm going to do the same to you.-she says as she starts filming me (while driving my speed, approx 23k/h)
-Ok
-How do you like being recorded?
-It's fine, I'm not doing anything wrong. You shouldn't use your phone while driving tho.
-I'll post you online.
-ok

Car behind her honks, she swears and rage drives away.

ClintonAnderson,

@pezmico Here in Windsor Ontario Canada, I can submit pictures of vehicles blocking our painted bike gutters, and have them issued a ticket.

I don't ever engage with anyone behind the wheel. It's never worth the grief, two adults shouting at each other in public.....

Be safe eh

It's not a great story but it's real.

I share it because it's illustrative of the entitlement of (many) motorists.

She knew enough to not take her call in the middle of the road. But the bike lane is fair game?

And then she somehow thinks she's attacking a bike rider by filming him riding on the bike lane (as intended) while driving dangerously herself?

It's .
I'm sure she can't see it and that's very sad.

Anyway if anyone sees her video of a dude in a red bike with blinking lights on front and back, wearing a very shiny reflective jacket, black balaclava and a and a black helmet please link me to it because I've been waiting for my 15 minutes of fame forever.

Of course none of this would have even happened if this city's idea of acceptable active transport infrastructure wasn't just a line of paint on the side of the stroad that sometimes may or may not be coloured green.

Properly separated active lanes save motorists the stress of dealing with cyclists like me.
(they also save the lives and health of people on bikes and scooters but we know what the priorities are)

@pezmico

The nearest "bike lane" to my home, in a small, rural town, isn't even separated by a line of paint.

Just by a chevron and a bike silhouette painted every ten metres or so in the only lane, shared by bikes, cars and tractors.

IDK what it's supposed to do in practice.

@EricLawton @pezmico it's what I call "" because it's more lethal than the 's border whilst forcing cyclists into the and incentivizing illegally tight takeovers by cars.

Also don't just target but even and full-size even if they literally drive at speed limit for the road...

@pezmico 25 years ago when I had just moved to the Netherlands I was on a bus that stopped (in a bus stop) and there was a delay while the driver radioed in the number plate of a car parked in a cycle lane. From what I understood they'd get a parking ticket.

That's how you get a cycling culture.
