Anyone considering how to break the already? Any alternative work in progress?

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@samuel_p @Codeberg Just to be clear, Reddit also started out as an open source project and later became proprietary.

It's a good reminder that being open source isn't necessarily a guarantee something will stay that way.

I think the lack of a good screenshot utility is what's going to get me to leave behind. The default one is not great, and none of the others that work on Wayland work for me on Gnome. Get the same errors with grim/slurp and flameshot.

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I just use the default screenshot utility to capture images and then add any annotations with KolourPaint.

If I wanted to start a blog, but had no interest in managing the software of it, which platform should I choose? Honestly been out of the blogging space for so long, I have no idea what the options are outside of managed wordpress.

@thelinuxcast If you're fine with static sites, I recommend using Publii. It's like Hugo and Jekyll, but much easier to set up and use.

Anyone know if there's a good alternative for Flameshot that works well with Wayland?

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast @kroyio Try installing Flameshot as a Flatpak. That will probably work.

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast @kroyio 🤔 What about trying out the Spectacle Flatpak since you already have the KDE runtime installed?

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast @kroyio Wait... Did you check the permissions for that Flatpak? Try making it run using the Wayland socket and disable X11.

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast @kroyio Oops! It's not available as a Flatpak. It's available as a Snap, though.

I think I mixed it up with ksnip. I've tried that before and it worked well.

I really wish more designers were excited about using and designing free and open-source software.

Good design often means thoughtful, accessible, future-proof, frugal over slick, smoothly animated or "bleeding edge", yet most of the design discourse appears to be about gradient blurs, fancy color profiles, or the latest proprietary hardware.

Sorry designers, this discourse doesn't interest me. Let's talk about how we build apps that don't rot, or need the internet, or use too much energy.

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@lobau I see where you're coming from, but designers are designers because they care about those gradient blurs, fancy color profiles and slick animations over the software itself.

Although I do agree we need more communication between FOSS developers and designers, I think the key to excite designers about free and open source software is to build apps that are designed well and intuitive to people in that profession.

It's really great to see the love and care that went into releasing "Factorio" on Linux.

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/04/factorio-devs-detail-their-linux-adventures-in-a-new-blog-post/

However, this does show that there is a lot of unnecessary friction to release a game natively on Linux.

Now that we are slowly gaining some marketshare in the desktop space, I really hope we can smooth out these details to provide a better experience for developers.

It would significantly encourage more game studios to support Linux natively.

It's a bit intriguing to see regular distro releases like Ubuntu 24.04 being covered by more mainstream news outlets.

Maybe I'm too corpratist, but why do companies like Epic think they can force Apple and Google to allow Epic Games into their app stores for free? I get it that 30% is outrageous. It is. But Epic seems to want to be in the stores for free, without having to ever pay any fees to be there.

It just doesn't make sense to me.

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Isn't Epic Games trying to rather distribute their stuff using their own app store than rely on Apple and Google?

The issue seems to be that Android and iOS are pretty locked down though.

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Do their reasons for starting this really matter that much?

It can't be denied that what they're doing now is pretty beneficial to a lot of developers and may give users more choices.

Downloading GOG offline installers is often slow...
In the next release, we will be using gogdl (or its upcoming Rust replacement) to download GOG games.
We will also switch our Amazon integration to Nile (https://github.com/imLinguin/nile) which should solve some of our issues.

ProfessorCode, (edited )
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@lutris Will there still be support for installing a GOG game using its offline installer?

Heroic does allow you to use offline installers but it doesn't recognize it as a "GOG game" (under "Library").

GNOME also provides some integration with USBGuard, so you can check this ArchWiki page if you want to enable it there.

You may have seen the “Verified” badge on apps from Flathub which shows that the developer has proven ownership of their app, e.g. via their website or code host.

With great adoption (nearly 1,000 verified apps!), we’re trying something out to help with transparency:

⚠️ Unverified

If you see this, it flags that the app has not been verified by its developer—it’s effectively a community-maintained package.

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@flathub I think it should be changed from just "Verified" or "Unverified" to "Verified/Unverified Publisher".

It would indicate much more clearly what the verified tag actually signifies on Flathub.

I guess HP finally did it.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/hp-wants-you-to-pay-up-to-36-month-to-rent-a-printer-that-it-monitors/

They are now selling printers as part of a subscription service to save you "the hassle of owning a printer and running out of ink".

At least for now, there doesn't seem to be an upfront cost but that may change over time.

Hot take: video games have peaked in terms of resource requirements and there's not much need to keep making better and better GPUs etc. Hardware has been more than enough for several years now

ProfessorCode,
@ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

@drewdevault I don't think this paints an entirely accurate picture.

While it's true that modern hardware can easily render photorealistic graphics, there are other factors like more complex AI and VR which could potentially contribute to pushing forward the baseline.
